WBB: Falcons Open Season With 65-55 Win Over Howard Community College

Box Score 11/13/21

SANBORN, NY – The Lackawanna College Women's Basketball team overcame 33 turnovers and a fourth quarter deficit to pull away and capture their first win of the 2021-2022 season, a 65-55 victory over Howard Community College in the Niagara County Tip-Off Classic on Saturday afternoon.

The Falcons (1-0) trailed by as many as nine in the first quarter, 29-22 at halftime, and, after battling back to grab the lead, were down 49-45 early in the fourth quarter. Lackawanna College went on a game-deciding scoring run, 20-6 the rest of the way, to ensure the Falcons would hang on for their first win of the season.

The Dragons (2-4) had 15 steals and forced 33 turnovers in the game, but couldn't overcome hitting just 27% of their shots, including 1-for-11 from beyond-the-arc for the game. The Falcon defense harassed the Dragons, blocking five shots, four from Mohogony Collins alone.

Lackawanna College had three players in double-figures, led by Nya Morris, who had a game-high 21 points on 9-for-14 shooting. Ny Jackson added ten points off the bench, as did Collins, who also had a game-high 13 rebounds for the double-double. The Falcons outscored the Dragons 30-6 in bench points.

The initial pressure from the Howard CC defense, pressing full-court, gave the Falcons trouble when trying to advance the ball down the floor, allowing the Dragons to take advantage and jump out early. However, as the game went on, the poor shooting from Howard prevented the Dragons from running away with the game, and gave Lackawanna College a chance to get back into the game. The Falcons outscored the Dragons 23-14 in the third quarter, scoring more points in that quarter than they had in the entire first half. Lackawanna College shot 58% in the second half, and was six-for-eight from the FT line down the stretch, going 12-for-18 overall from the charity stripe.

Twelve Lackawanna College players got time, and ten of them scored for the Falcons.

Lackawanna College gets right back to work on Sunday afternoon when they play the host Niagara County CC. The game is set for a 1:00pm ET tip-off. You can watch the game HERE.
