Box Score Wilmington, NC – The #19 Lackawanna College Women's Basketball team entered the 2nd day of the Sea Devils Christmas Classic with an enormous challenge in front of them. After beating East Georgia State College yesterday, the Lady Falcons turned their attention to South Georgia Technical College. The Lady Jets compete in Division 1 of the NJCAA and are coming off a win over host school Cape Fear Community College. The win moved them to 13-1 on the year. Lackawanna knew this would be a test and they would need to limited turnovers if they were to come away with the win.
South Georgia Tech started the game on 5-0 run with a 3-pointer and 2 free-throws. The Lady Falcons would answer with a Kiana Williams jumper to cut the lead to 5-2. Ciaira Loyd would then find Williams again down low, which led to 2 free-throws. She connected on 1, to trim the lead to 6-3. The Lady Jets quickly answered with a lay-up to go back up 8-3. South Georgia Tech limited Lackawanna's 2nd chance opportunities, would made it difficult for them to score. However, Briaunna McCullough would finally get a 2nd chance opportunity and convert on a jumper and the And-1 opportunity, to pull within 2 points. Keyanah Price tied the game on the next possession by knocking down 2 free-throws. A 3 by Ciaira Loyd gave the Lady Falcons their 1st lead of the game, 15-13 and at the end of the quarter, the Lady Falcons held a 1-point lead, 15-14.
At the start of the 2nd quarter, the Lady Jets hit a jumper and 2 free-throws to retake the lead, 18-15. A South Georgia Tech 3 pushed the lead to 21-16 but Keyanah Price would answer for Lackawanna, pulling them within 3. The Lady Jets quickly answered and extended their lead to 27-20, with 5:24 left in the quarter. Another South Georgia Tech 3 and layup gave the Lady Jets their largest lead of the game, 32-22. Both teams would trade baskets, until Keyanah Price connected on a 3-pointer and Jasmine Lewis on a lay-up to take the teams into the locker room, with the Lady Jets leading 40-33.
The 3rd quarter saw the defensive pressure pick up for both teams. However, South Georgia Tech capitalized on more scoring opportunities to increase their lead to 47-35. Briaunna McCullough cut the lead to 47-37, but the Lady Jets continued to push the ball and score, stretching their lead to 12, 51-39. The Lady Falcons, knowing that had to make a run in the quarter, began to press the Lady Jets after a made basket. Their press would cause a turnover and they were able to pull within 10 points. However, every time they pulled to within 10, South Georgia Tech seemed to have an answer. The quarter would end with Lackawanna trailing 54-42.
Despite being down 12, the Lady Falcons continued to push the ball and look for scoring opportunities. This started on the defensive side of the ball, where Keyanah Price continued to crash the boards. Jamie Brann also made it difficult for the Lady Jets as she played strong defense down low. As she did in yesterday's game Ciaira Loyd, found scoring opportunities to keep Lackawanna in the game. Briaunna McCullough also was able to provide an offensive spark, helping the Lady Falcons cut the lead to 8, with 3 minutes remaing in the game. There was no give up in Lackawanna's game and after a Kiana Williams free-throw and Ciaira Loyd lay-up, the lead was cut to 6, 64-58. Unfortunately, the Lady Falcons would not be able to cut in to the lead anymore, as they would fall to South Georgia Tech, 70-60.
Lackawanna finishes the 2019 portion of their season with a record of 8-3. Briaunna McCullough led the Lady Falcons with 14 points, followed Ciaira Loyd with 13. Keyanah Price led the team in rebounds with 2 on the offensive side and 8 on the defensive side. Lackawanna will return to action after the new year on January 6th, when they travel to Cheyney University of Pennsylvania to take on the Lady Wolves at 5:30pm.
