NEWTON, NJ – Against a team receiving attention nationally, Lackawanna College women's soccer team knew it'd be up against it on the road on Saturday afternoon. Keeper
Madison Kattner (New Ringgold, PA) posted ten saves, but the Falcons fell to the Skylanders from Sussex County CC, 9-0, at the Sussex County CC soccer field.
Â
The Falcons (1-6-0, 0-4-0) did their best to keep pace with unbeaten Sussex (9-0-0, 4-0-0), which has been receiving votes just outside the NJCAA Division II national rankings the last few weeks. The Skylanders scored within the first eight minutes of game play to go ahead 1-0, but the Falcons held firm through the next half hour of play, defending ferociously and keeping Sussex off the board.
Â
That pressure eventually paid off for the Skylanders, as a deep shot from the left side of the box in the 28
th minute beat Kattner to make it 2-0. Four minutes later, Sussex added a third goal, then the Falcons had a chance when
Lindsey Tasker (Clarks Summit, PA) boomed a long ball off a free kick towards the goal. The ball caromed back off the keeper and in front of the goal, but the Falcons couldn't capitalize, and Sussex immediately pounced, hitting a break the other way to score a fourth goal in the 33
rd minute. Sussex added one more in the 34
th minute, taking a 5-0 lead. They'd add two more, scoring on a header in the 36
th minute, then punching another in in the 39
th minute, taking a 7-0 lead into the break.
Â
Sussex added an eighth goal just a few minutes into the second half, then put a ninth on the board in the 67
th minute. The game would end early via the goal-differential rule at the 70
th minute.
Â
The Falcons are back to work with a tough road contest next Saturday, October 11
th, at Mercer County CC. Kickoff is set for 12:00pm ET at Mercer County CC's soccer field in West Windsor Twp., NJ.Â
