WSOC: Second-Half Collapse Dooms Falcons Against Shepherd

The Rams Scored Six Second-Half Goals To Down The Falcons

10/17/26

SCRANTON, Pa. – Lackawanna College women's soccer defended desperately through the first half, but the Falcons cracked under the mounting pressure in the second half, as Shepherd broke through with six goals to win 7-0 on a blustery Saturday afternoon at Schautz Stadium.

The Falcons (1-13-0) were out-shot 37-3 for the game, with 25 shots on target for the Rams (10-4-1), but the defense only surrendered one goal, coming in the 35th minute. Keeper Sophia Arvelo (Allentown, PA) made nine first-half saves and 18 total saves, but was doing everything she could to keep the Falcons within striking distance.

However, as the second half wound on, the pressure continued to mount from Shepherd, and the legs of the Falcons grew tired. Eventually, Shepherd doubled its lead with a goal in the 64th minute, and suddenly the dam broke just ten minutes later, as the Rams scored goals in the 74th, 78th, 83rd, 85th, and 88th minutes. The goal in the 85th came after a handball in the box was awarded with a Shepherd penalty, and the seventh and final goal of the game came when Shepherd managed to beat a diving Arvelo on her right side.

Mathea Solgaard (Trondheim, Norway) had a shot on target in the first half, and the Falcons had two more come in the second stanza, with Alana Alayo (Cherry Hill, NJ) attempting one from distance and MacKenzie Seifried (Winfield, NJ) posting an attempt in the 82nd minute off a breakaway, but Shepherd repelled the Falcons to hang on for the shutout.

The loss is the tenth-in-a-row for Lackawanna College. The Falcons will try to get off the mat with a home game in their next contest against East Stroudsburg University, set for a 3:30pm ET start on Wednesday, October 21st, at Schautz Stadium.
