WEST WINDSOR TWP., NJ – Missing a few players and playing short-handed, Lackawanna College battled hard with Mercer County CC throughout Saturday afternoon's contest in the Garden State, but the Mustangs eventually pulled away for a 5-0 win in Region XIX Division II play.
Â
The Falcons (1-7-0, 0-5-0) competed with just nine players, but accounted for themselves very well, trailing just 2-0 at halftime and holding to that margin well into the second half. Keeper
Elizabeth DePrimo (Dunmore, PA) did her best in goal, coming up with 17 stops.
Â
Seven minutes in, Mercer (8-4-4, 4-1-1) took advantage of the relentless pressure, pouncing on a loose ball after DePrimo had managed to parry away a long distance shot, going ahead 1-0 on the rebound. The Falcons defended well through the rest of the half, but Mercer found another goal, this time on a cross that was deflected up by a Falcon defender, eventually landing on the head of a Mercer player and looping over DePrimo to make it 2-0 after 30 minutes.
Â
The Falcons once again defended well into the second half, but Mercer found a third in the 64
th minute, then added a fourth on a long-range free kick that whistled past DePrimo to make it 4-0. A fifth goal came in the 83
rd minute on a loose cross in the box that was spilled to the left to a wide-open player.
Â
Lackawanna College has its home finale set for next Saturday, October 18
th, when the Falcons are set to host Essex County College. First kick is set for 12:00pm ET at Schautz Stadium in Dunmore, and the game is the first of a doubleheader, with the men's squads playing afterwards at 2:00pm ET.
