Women's Basketball
Lackawanna women's basketball pulled the upset earlier this season, but the Falcons wouldn't catch Harcum by surprise the second time around, as the Bears dominated from start to finish in a 75-46 defeat of the Falcons on Saturday afternoon in Region XIX DII action in Southeastern PA.
Â
The Falcons (13-6, 8-4) won the first match-up earlier this season in Scranton in November, and had early hopes of pulling a similar surprise. After an initial burst from the home squad, a three-point play from
Saraiah Franklin (Philadelphia, PA) brought the Falcons within 6-5 just three minutes into the game. While Harcum (15-5, 8-3) struggled to get the offense into rhythm, the Falcons kept missing their opportunities. Eventually, back-to-back three-pointers helped the Bears open the lead up to 12-5 at 4:35 to play in the first quarter, forcing a Lackawanna timeout.
Desiree White (Carlisle, PA) followed her own miss to score out of the timeout, but the pressure mounted, and the Bears continued to put the defensive screws to the Falcons, eventually pulling ahead at 20-9 after one quarter of play.
Â
Despite the lopsided early score, Harcum's offense wasn't always smooth, but the Bears started to open things up to start the second quarter, using a 7-2 burst to open up a 27-11 lead in the early going. Lackawanna could only muster eight points in the second quarter, trailing 38-17 at the break.
Â
The #17 Bears held firm throughout the second half, expanding the lead as high as 29 points, which would end up being the final margin. The Falcons, to their credit, never stopped playing hard, but the Bears continued to play tough defense, and the shots were not falling for Lackawanna on the day.
Â
The loss drops the Falcons to 8-4 in Region XIX DII play and down from second to fourth place, now behind top-seed Union (10-0), as well as both Harcum (8-3) and Raritan Valley (7-3). Lackawanna will have a chance to leapfrog past Raritan when they face the Lions in their next game on Tuesday, January 28
th, at home in the historic Lackawanna College Student Union gymnasium. Tip-off for the game is at 5:00pm ET, and the contest is the first of a doubleheader, with the men's teams following at 7:00pm ET. Raritan beat Lackawanna earlier this season when the two sides met in December in Branchburg, NJ.
