WVB: Lackawanna Rallies Past Harcum, Sweeps Harrisburg Area For Tri-Match Victory

The Falcons Erased A 2-1 Deficit In Match One To Get The Five-Set Win, Then Powered Past HACC For The Sweep In Match Two

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 9/21/24

SCRANTON, Pa. – Potentially facing their first Region XIX defeat of the season, Lackawanna College women's volleyball shook off the dust and roared past Harcum College and Harrisburg Area CC in a tri-match victory for the Falcons on Saturday morning inside the historic Lackawanna College Student Union gymnasium. Lackawanna defeated Harcum in five sets (25-20, 22-25, 22-25, 25-13, 15-9) to kick off the action, then knocked off HACC in a three-set sweep (25-17, 25-13, 25-16) in the final match of the day. HACC beat Harcum in four sets (25-27, 25-8, 25-20, 25-17) in the middle match.

The Falcons (10-3) were in an uncomfortable spot after three sets, trailing Harcum (2-4) by a 2-1 margin. The visiting Bears had forced the Falcons into errors and had been dominant at the net with their blocking scheme. To illustrate the problem for Lackawanna, the Falcons held a 21-17 lead in the third set, but the Bears took advantage of four Lackawanna hitting errors and a rotation error to turn the third set on its head and go ahead 22-21. An ace made it 23-21, and to add a literal injury to the insult, Lackawanna's starting middle hitter, Neurdia Osias (Huntington Station, NY), went down with an apparent lower leg during the next point that would keep her out of the rest of the match. Harcum went on to take it 25-22, and the Falcons were reeling heading into set four.

Once that fourth stanza started, however, it was a different story, as the Birds came out firing. A block gave Harcum the early lead, but Aryana Girvan (Clarion, PA) smoked a kill down the right side that got the Falcons started, as Lackawanna rocketed out to a 5-1 lead. Harcum, after a timeout, brought it back to 5-4, but a Jana Hofmann (Colorado Springs, CO) kill broke the serve for Harcum. Later in the set, with the Falcons ahead 11-9, a hitting error from Harcum gifted the Falcons a three-point lead, and Angelique Fuentes (Miami, FL) got a chance to serve. That change helped Lackawanna score the next three points to open a 15-9 lead, and the Falcons would make it a 12-2 run to expand their lead out to 23-11, helped by numerous Harcum violations at the net. Eventually, Lackawanna won the set at 25-13 when Alasiah Carter (Coatesville, PA) lofted a kill to the back left corner.

The fifth set was a tight affair, as expected, through the early points, with Lackawanna taking an early 4-1 lead, then Harcum getting it to 5-5. The Falcons led 8-5 when the sides switched, as Fuentes looped a kill down the middle over the block from Harcum. Hofmann provided the service on the restart, and a bad overpass led to a Fuentes kill that made it 9-5. A receiving error made it 10-5, Lackawanna, and the Falcons got to eleven on a Delaney Petri (Delevan, NY) kill. A Girvan kill made it 12-5, then the Bears couldn't return a kill attempt, making it an 8-0 run for the Falcons at 13-5. A hitting error broke the Lackawanna serve, and Harcum got it to within 13-9, before a Hoffman kill made it 14-9, with Fuentes serving for match point. Angie would secure the match with an ace to win a five-set contest in the opener.

After Harrisburg Area (5-4) knocked off the Bears in four sets in the middle match, it was time for the Hawks and the Falcons to get together for the third match of the day.

As sloppy as Lackawanna looked out of the gates against Harcum, the Falcons were crisper against Harrisburg Area, jumping out to a 4-1 lead early in the first set. Lackawanna held a 14-10 lead in the set when Fuentes placed a kill to break serve, and the Falcons then scored a point on a hitting error to force a timeout. Another Falcon point came on a hitting error on the restart, making it 17-10. HACC scored a kill to break the Lackawanna serve, but two more points, including an ace from Girvan, made it 19-11, Falcons. Fuentes added a kill on an overpass to make it 20-11 and, though the Hawks made the Falcons sweat it out, Lackawanna won the set at 25-17 on a hitting error on Harrisburg.

In set two, Lackawanna held a steady 2–3-point lead until they led 10-7. With Harrisburg serving, the Falcons got a kill from Carter on the left side and handed the ball to Hofmann. Hofmann got an ace to go up 12-7, and back-to-back kills from Carter and Girvan made it 14-7, Falcons. Carter got another kill, followed by another Hofmann ace, putting the Falcons ahead 16-7 and forcing a HACC timeout. On the restart, Lackawanna got another point on a hitting error to take a double-digit lead, then went up 18-7 when Girvan slammed a kill down the left side. Lackawanna made it nine straight points on another Hofmann ace, then hit 20 points on a Nadia Toth (Dalton, PA) kill down the middle. Toth made it eleven straight points on a block at the net, and the run finally ended there on a hitting error from the Falcons, making it 21-8, Lackawanna. The Falcons won the set when Petri lofted a kill attempt over the block, and Harrisburg failed to get it back over at 25-13.

Set three saw Lackawanna start fast with Maddilyn Durfee (Buffalo, NY) serving, as the Falcons ran off the first nine points, five of which came on errors from Harrisburg. The Hawks answered with five straight points of their own, and the set stayed in that 3-to-5 point range for the most part. Lackawanna got it out to seven on a Girvan kill from the back row that made it 17-10, and the Falcons eventually had it at 21-12 on another ace from Durfee. Harrisburg got it to within 23-16, but the Falcons scored two straight points, winning the match on a hitting error on the Hawks, to close things out at 25-16.

Lackawanna is now 4-0 in EPAC play, and 3-0 in Region XIX DII. The Falcons get a bit of a breather, not back in action until Saturday, September 28th, when they travel to Schnecksville, PA for a tri-match on the road. Lackawanna is scheduled to take on host Lehigh Carbon CC in EPAC action at 11:00am ET, then Middlesex College at 1:00pm ET.
