WVB: Setters Outpace Falcons In Three-Set Sweep

Lackawanna Had A Ton Of Unforced Errors And Couldn't Overcome Sloppy Play To Knock Off Pace

8/29/26

SCRANTON, Pa. – Lackawanna College women's volleyball opened 2026 with a tough match-up against Pace University, and the Setters took advantage of multiple errors from the Falcons, winning in straight sets (25-13, 25-13, 25-8) on Saturday afternoon inside the historic Lackawanna College Student Union gymnasium, the first official match for the Falcons against NCAA competition.

Lackawanna (0-1) was flagged for 23 attack errors and gave up eleven aces to the Setters (2-0). Pace got seven kills from Leah Mendez, along with six kills from Kadence Ackmann, while the Falcons were led by Jana Hofmann (Colorado Springs, CO) with seven kills.

Pace went on a six-point run early in the first set to get ahead 8-2, and the Setters built their lead from there, getting ahead 13-4 at one point. Pace jumped out to a double-digit lead at 18-8 on back-to-back kills from Paola Ortiz and Ackmann, and the Falcons managed to show a little life to get back within 20-13, courtesy of a pair of errors, but the Setters went on a 5-0 run to close out set one.

In set two, Pace raced to a 5-0 lead, but the Falcons got within 6-3 after a kill from Neurdia Osias (Huntington Station, NY). Pace used a 4-0 spurt to go ahead 10-3, and then lengthened the lead out to double-digits eventually, getting things to 20-10 on three-straight errors from the Falcons. Pace finished the set off on an error from Lackawanna to go ahead 2-0.

The bottom fell out for the Falcons in set three, as Pace raced out to an 8-1 lead and pushed it to 12-2 before Lackawanna could even set itself. The Setters turned a 13-4 lead into 16-4 on three-straight errors form the Falcons, the beginning of an 8-1 run that made it 21-5. A kill by Sophia Bedics (Bethlehem, PA), followed by an attack error, made it 21-7, but Pace scored another pair to get to 23-7. A Hofmann kill was followed by one for the Setters, and Pace won match point on another attack error.

Kaitlyn Reed (Aurora, CO) posted a team-high seven assists, while first-year libero Hailey Buck (Johnstown, PA) collected 13 digs to lead the Falcons in her first start. Bedics had five kills on .267 hitting.

Lackawanna doesn't have long to rest, as the Falcons get back to work with a familiar foe on Tuesday, September 1st, when Monroe University comes to town. The match is set for a 6:00pm ET start inside the historic Lackawanna College Student Union gymnasium.
