SCRANTON, Pa. – A dominant performance from Lackawanna College women's soccer helped give the program its first varsity victory in nearly three years, as the Falcons tamed the Cougars from Lehigh Carbon CC with a 7-1 thumping on Thursday afternoon on the road.
Â
The Falcons (1-1) got a hattrick from
Melanie Shumway (Rome, PA) and a brace of goals from
Lindsey Tasker (Clarks Summit, PA), while
Chloe Stafursky (Peckville, PA) and
Autumn Frederick (Etters, PA) each scored their first goals of their careers in the victory. Tasker added three saves for the Falcons.
Â
The first half saw Shumway put a pair of goals away, and Stafursky got on the scoresheet as well to push the halftime lead for Lackawanna to 3-0. In the second, Tasker came out of goal, replaced by
Emma Scalese, and went out into the field. She had an immediate impact, scoring a goal via penalty, then one from open play, assisted by Shumway. Frederick got in on the fun, and Shumway finished off her hattrick to close out the scoring. Sarah Hope scored in the second half for Lehigh Carbon, representing the only goal for the Cougars (1-1). Â
Â
The win is the first for second-year coach
Dan Badyrka and is the first varsity competition victory for the program since October 17, 2021, when the Falcons beat SUNY Ulster on the road, 3-0.
Â
Lackawanna gets back to work next week, when the Falcons travel to take on Sussex County CC. Kickoff is set for a 4:00pm ET start in Newton, NJ.
