EDISON, NJ – When Lackawanna College women's basketball most likely had its season on the line, the Falcons answered with a crucial 64-55 road victory at Middlesex College on Saturday afternoon in NJCAA Region XIX Division II action.
Â
The Falcons (7-11, 3-5) came into the game tied with the Colts (15-8, 2-6) record-wise in the region, but on the outside looking in at a playoff berth. A win would solidify their standing for the fourth-seed, and the Falcons responded by putting five players in double-figures and leading almost the entire way on the road.
Â
Things were tight early, as the hosts jumped out to a 7-2 advantage. Lackawanna never panicked, however, and rattled off nine in a row to take an 11-7 lead, and, eventually, a 13-9 lead after the first quarter. The lead expanded out to double-digits, before settling at nine at the break, and that's the way it would stay the rest of the way, with Lackawanna's lead waffling between double-digits and, when Middlesex would try to mount a run, as close as seven points. But every time the home team charged, the Falcons wouldn't budge, leaning on a defense that turned in 13 steals and an offense that, while only shooting 25%, grabbed an impressive 35 offensive rebounds.
Â
Desiree White (First Year; Carlisle, PA) led Lackawanna with a team and game-high 20 points.
Jayla South (First Year; Long Pond, PA) had 13 points and 16 rebounds, as well as four steals and four blocks.
Saraiah Franklin (First Year; Philadelphia, PA) had ten points and 16 rebounds, while
Nariyah Turner (Sophomore; Philadelphia, PA) was the third Falcon to put up a double-double with ten points and eleven boards.Â
Semaji Young (First Year; Philadelphia, PA) had one of her best games to date, scoring eleven points off the bench, pulling down six rebounds, and dishing out five assists.
Â
Courtney Hansen led Middlesex with 17 points. Kezia Feaster added 12 points, while Vanessa Rivas put up ten for the Colts, who now sit behind the Falcons in fifth place in the Region standings. As things stand right now in Region XIX, the Falcons, the fourth-seed, would host Middlesex, the fifth-seed, in a play-in game. The winner would advance to face top-seeded Union County College in the Region XIX semi-finals.
Â
Lackawanna College gets back to non-region play on Tuesday, February 6
th, when the Falcons are scheduled to host the SUNY Herkimer Generals. Tip is scheduled for a 5:00pm ET start inside the Lackawanna College Student Union gymnasium.
