CRANFORD, NJ – The Lackawanna College women's basketball team couldn't ride the momentum of a strong first quarter, as the Union College Owls were too much in an 87-65 setback for the Falcons on Tuesday evening in Region XIX Division II women's basketball action.
Â
The Falcons (10-13, 4-6) came out of the gates firing against the nationally-ranked Owls, coming in at tenth overall in the latest Division II rankings. Union (21-4, 9-1) and Lackawanna traded buckets early, but the Falcons used a mini-spurt capped by a
Desiree White (First Year; Carlisle, PA) three-pointer to go up seven at 20-13 late in the first. The Owls were able to close the gap to just three, thanks to a put-back lay-up as time expired on the quarter, and used that momentum into the second quarter.
Â
Union started to break away from the visitors in the second quarter, thanks to their patented pressure defense and a raucous homecourt advantage. The Owls forced turnovers, and also sped the Falcons offense up, while going on what would prove to be a decisive 10-1 run to take control of a tie game and force Lackawanna to play catch-up the rest of the way.
Â
To their credit, the Falcons really didn't let Union get too far ahead until the fourth quarter, as Union kept pressuring and took what was a nine-point lead and stretched it out to the final margin of 22.
Â
Lackawanna was led by White's 22 points on the night.
Saraiah Franklin (First Year; Philadelphia, PA) added 20 points, and
Jayla South (First Year; Long Pond, PA) put up 14 points.
Â
Union got a game-high 34 points from Khila Morris. Ahjanae Young added ten, while Najla Cecunjanin and Aleah James each put in nine points.
Â
Lackawanna will now turn its attention to the postseason, where the Falcons will compete in the Region XIX Division II women's basketball playoffs. Lackawanna is the fourth-seed, and will host a playoff home game this Saturday, February 24
th, at 1:00pm ET, against the fifth-seeded Middlesex County College Colts at the Lackawanna College Student Union. The winner of that game will face top-seeded Union next week in New Jersey in the region semi-finals.
