DUNMORE, Pa. – Despite two goals in two minutes from
Melanie Shumway in the first half, short-handed Lackawanna women's soccer fell 3-2 to Essex County College on Saturday afternoon at Schautz Stadium in Region XIX DII action.

The Falcons (2-4-0, 1-2-0) fell behind to Essex (3-3-1, 1-1-0) by a 2-0 margin with goals from the visitors in the 18
th and 24
th minutes. Lackawanna was able to answer back just five minutes later, through Shumway (Rome, PA) using her blazing speed to get around defenders and score in the 29
th minute. She'd get a second just two minutes later, once again knifing through the defense on a breakaway to make it 2-2 in the 31
st.

Neither team would get much more to speak of in the first half, but Essex broke through in the second half on a breakaway through the high-defensive line from Lackawanna, winning a 1v1 with keeper
Lindsey Tasker (Clarks Summit, PA) to take a one-goal lead in the 61
st minute.

Lackawanna couldn't muster much offense in the second half, as the numbers advantage for Essex started to take its toll. Lackawanna, which had 12 shots in the first half, managed just two in the second, and couldn't mount any sustained attack before the final whistle.

Tasker had eight saves, while Shumway had the pair of goals.
Autumn Frederick (Etters, PA) had three shots, two on target, while
Lani Thomas had three shots.

Lackawanna will get back to action on Wednesday, October 9
th, when the Falcons travel to take on Harcum College in Bryn Mawr, PA. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00pm ET, and will be the second of a doubleheader, with the men's teams playing first at 1:00pm ET.
