BRYN MAWR, Pa. – The Lackawanna College Women's Basketball team got off to a fast start against the Harcum Lady Bears in the first quarter, but they couldn't maintain the pace, falling in their Region XIX and regular season finale, 60-51, on Wednesday night.
Â
Nya Morris scored a team-high 19 points for Lackawanna College, while
McKeyah Duley and
Gabrielle Jackson added 12 and ten points, respectively. After a back-and-forth first half that left both teams deadlocked at 35, the Falcons were able to hold Harcum without a bucket for the first five-and-a-half minutes of the third quarter. Unfortunately for Lackawanna College, the Falcons only scored three points in that same span, allowing the Lady Bears to hang around. Harcum's offense never quite kicked on, but the Lady Bears (15-11, 5-4) were 9-for-13 from the free throw line in the second half, doing just enough to give themselves a comfortable cushion. The Lady Bears defense did its job in the second half, limiting the Falcons to just five made field goals in the third and fourth quarters combined.
Â
The Falcons (8-11, 3-6) end their regular season on a three game losing streak in Region XIX, and will have to wait until after a Region XIX meeting on Sunday, February 20
th, to know if they will make the playoffs or not.
Â
The first quarter did not resemble the rest of the game for either team, as both Harcum and Lackawanna College found success on offense. The Falcons and Lady Bears went shot-for-shot in the first few minutes, with Morris and Jackson providing the early points for Lackawanna College. Morris, who had 12 first quarter points, was part of the reason the Falcons built a 22-17 lead with just over a minute to play. The other part of that was
McKeyah Duley hitting the first of three first half three-pointers to make it a five-point lead, the largest of the period for either side. Harcum would close the quarter with a free throw, good defense that forced a shot clock violation, and a bucket just before the end of the quarter to make it 22-20 after one. A cause for concern for both teams was the amount of fouls, with ten combined in the first period alone.
Â
The Lady Bears opened up the second quarter on a tear, going on a 10-2 run to open up a six-point advantage at 30-24 with under six minutes to play. The Falcons went almost five minutes between
Ashante Amos's free throws at 9:21 and
McKeyah Duley's three-pointer at 4:28. That was the first make from the field in over seven minutes of game time for the Falcons, but it cut the Harcum lead to just three at 30-27. The Lady Bears would answer with a three of their own to push the deficit back to six, but the Falcons ended the half on an 8-2 run to tie things at 35-all at the halftime whistle.
Â
The Falcons played solid defense through the first half of the third quarter, not allowing the Lady Bears to score, but Lackawanna College could only manage three points of their own, courtesy of an
Ashante Amos three-pointer from the left wing, which made it 38-35 Falcons just over two minutes into the quarter. Eventually, a Purchas three-pointer would tie things up at 38-all with 4:20 to play in the third. Lackawanna wouldn't go quietly, as another Duley three-pointer, her fourth of the game, gave the Falcons a 41-38 lead. The Lady Bears would hold the Falcons to just two points over the last four minutes of the third, scoring seven of their own to take a 45-43 lead into the final frame.
A
Nya Morris bucket off a turnover made it 45-all with 9:20 to go, and the Falcons would force a one-and-done possession on the other side to get the ball back with a chance at the lead, but they couldn't convert, giving Harcum the chance to take the lead back on a free throw. Such was the theme of the fourth, with the Falcons given several chances to tie or take the lead, but watching their shots spin in-and-out or rattle the cage, but never quite drop in. The only points, apart from Morris's transition bucket, in the first half of the fourth quarter was a pair of free throws from Harcum, but the Lady Bears grabbed a steal and went coast-to-coast for the lay-up to extend their lead out to four. After a pair of free throws were converted, Lackawanna found themselves in a 51-45 hole with 4:20 to play.
Â
After a timeout, the Falcons tried to bring some defensive pressure, but Harcum was able to break the press and splash home a three from the left wing, opening up a nine-point advantage with under four minutes to go.
Gabrielle Jackson finally broke the scoreless streak with a free throw at 3:53, cutting the deficit to 54-46, but the Bears answered with a tough lay-up in the paint, extending out to the first double-digit lead of the game at 56-46. A Jackson runner with 3:06 finally broke the field goal drought at over six minutes, but the Falcons would only get three free throws, all from Jackson, the rest of the way.
Â
The Falcons now await their fate after the Region XIX committee meets on Sunday to decide seeding for the Division II playoff tournament. The Falcons, at 3-6, are currently fourth in the Region XIX standings. There is one more Region XIX game remaining this week, happening tomorrow night when Harcum College travels to Delaware Tech. A win for Delaware Tech would place them at 3-5 in Region XIX play, putting the Terry Hawks ahead of the Falcons in the Region XIX standings. A Harcum win would keep the Falcons in fourth. Harcum won the last meeting between the two, 85-81, earlier this year.
