COLUMBIA, MD – The Lackawanna College Women's Soccer team battled with nationally ranked Howard Community College in the finale of the Dragon Classic on Sunday afternoon, and the home cruised throughout to a 9-1 win over Lackawanna College.Â
Â
For the third straight game, the Falcons (0-3-0) faced off against a terrific women's soccer program, this time in the form of the Dragons (4-1-0), a program that has made it to six NJCAA tournaments under coach Kate Seagroves. Howard, ranked #12 in the latest NJCAA Division II soccer polls, came into the contest having defeated fellow nationally ranked Brookdale CC 3-1 in their match-up on Saturday.
Â
The Dragons controlled the game from the jump, scoring four goals in the first 30 minutes of action. Their high-pressing flustered the Falcons offense, not allowing Lackawanna College to maintain possession for very long.
Sophia Andreoli was her usual sparking self in goal, but the pressure and amount of shots mounted as the half wore on. The fifth goal of the half came in the 36
th minute off a corner kick into the box that was pinballed around before being sent back into the box, where the Dragon forward turned and fired low into the bottom corner.
Â
Lackawanna College would get on the board before the half closed out. In the 40
th minute, with the Falcons possessing in the offensive third, a blocked shot was deflected wide to
Aliyah Shade on the edge of the box, who quickly back-passed to
Lexi Livelsberger, who just as quickly lofted a right-footed cross right onto the right foot of
Ashley Bruno, who one-timed it into the top left corner to make it 5-1. The goal is Bruno's second goal of the year, and Livelsberger's first assist of the campaign.
Â
After the halftime whistle, the first ten minutes were relatively even, with both sides creating chances and holding possession, but the Dragons found goal #6 in the 56
th minute, and would hit the net three more times before the end of the game. Despite the growing deficit, the Falcons continued to play hard and defend through to the final whistle.
Â
Lackawanna College has a few days off before going back out on the road, this time with a trip to Bryn Mawr, PA to take on Harcum College on Thursday September 23
rd. The game is currently set for a 3:00pm kick. Check back to lackawannafalcons.com for updates on video streams to watch, if they become available, stats, schedule updates, and more.
