WBB: Comeback Effort Falls Short In Loss To #12 Union County College
Â
CRANFORD, NJ – The Lackawanna College Falcons women's basketball team fell behind early, stormed back, and got as close as seven points from Union County College in the fourth quarter, but the twelfth-ranked Owls were too much, winning 89-70 in Region XIX action on Tuesday night.
Â
Gabrielle Jackson scored 21 points for the Falcons, 12 coming in the third quarter, and
Nya Morris added 19, ten coming in the fourth, as the Falcons (1-3) tried to claw back against the Owls (4-0), who jumped out early on the Falcons and never let up.
Â
Lackawanna College hit three 3PT FGs in the first quarter, two coming from Morris and another from
McKeyah Duley, who would finish with three on the night, as the Falcons found themselves down 18-13 to Union after one. Lackawanna College would struggle to keep pace with Union in the second quarter, as the Owls scored 27 points in the period to take a 45-26 lead at the halftime whistle.
Â
The Falcons, time and time again, chipped away at the lead, only for the Owls to push it back up in a hurry. Lackawanna College, behind Jackson's third quarter outburst, got as close as 52-38 at the mid-way point of the third quarter, but Union went on a quick five point burst to regain control and push the lead back to 19. The Falcons would close the quarter well, staying within striking distance at 65-50 after three.
Â
The fourth quarter started splendidly for Lackawanna College, as the Falcons forced turnovers and took advantage of some misses from the Union County College offense. Morris came alive, and Duley hit another big three, while Lackawanna College slowly whittled the lead down to single digits. The Falcons had it down to a 72-65 deficit with just over seven minutes to play, but, as they had done all evening, the Owls responded with some three point shots and some timely defense of their own, going on a quick 9-0 spurt to make it 81-65 just a few minutes later. The Falcons ran out of gas, missing shots that, to that point, had been going in, and turning the ball over to the Owls, who converted those into points on the other end. Union also went 10-for-10 from the free throw line in the final period, helping them extend their lead.
Â
Lackawanna College gets right back into action this Saturday, December 4
th, when they travel to Newark, DE to take on Delaware Technical & Community College. The game is set for a 12:00pm tip, and will be the first of a doubleheader with the men's teams. If a live video stream becomes available, the athletics department will be sure to share it on our social media and online schedules at lackawannafalcons.com.
