WBB: Sluggish Second Quarter Grounds Falcons Against Niagara County CC

Box Score 11/14/21

SANBORN, NY – The Lackawanna College Women's Basketball team couldn't overcome a sluggish second quarter on the road, falling 81-70 to the Niagara County CC Thunder Wolves on Sunday afternoon in the Niagara County Tip-Off Classic.

The Falcons (1-1) led 18-13 after one quarter, but shot just 21% (3-for-14) from the field in the second, as the host Thunder Wolves (3-1) went 9-for-11 from the charity stripe in the second period alone, turning a five-point deficit into a 13-point lead at the break. Niagara would get three players in double-figures, and won despite shooting just 22% from downtown. The Thunder Wolves outrebounded Lackawanna College 55-to-46, and had 18 second chance points to Lackawanna's 11.

Lackawanna College had three players in double-figures on the day, including a team-high 13 points for Thays Torres off the bench. Torres hit three three-pointers, and had three steals for the Falcons. Nya Morris had 12 points and seven rebounds, while Gabrielle Jackson had 11 points and six rebounds. Lackawanna College shot just 35% for the game.

The Falcons started brightly, leading 7-0 just 90 seconds into the game, and held a 16-9 lead with just over 1:30 to play in the first quarter, but the cracks started to show, thanks to good ball pressure from Niagara.

The second quarter was Lackawanna College's undoing, as the Falcons slowly watched their lead turn into a two-point deficit at the 6:30 mark. After an injury stoppage, the Thunder Wolves pushed it further, going on an 11-2 run to lengthen their advantage to 33-22 with just over two minutes to go before the half. The Falcons struggled on offense, missing shots erratically, and kept fouling Niagara, who in turn sank nine of their eleven free throws in the quarter, helping them to a 38-25 lead at the break.

Lackawanna College fought back, cutting the lead to 41-35 at the 7:05 mark of the third quarter, getting points from Jay Lewis to help close the gap just under three minutes into the third quarter. Some good defense would lead to a transition lay-up from Deja Cromartie to make it 44-39 with 5:52 to play in the third quarter. The Falcons would inch closer at 45-41, and Mohogony Collins drew a charging foul to give the Falcons the ball with 4:34 to play in the third, but a Niagara three would spark a 14-4 run to close the third, making it 59-45 after three.

The shooting woes would come back to bother Lackawanna College, as the Falcons shot just 26% from the field in the fourth quarter. Niagara would open up a 73-50 lead just over three minutes into the quarter, and the Falcons would be playing catch-up the rest of the way. Lackawanna College would scratch and claw and get within ten points at 78-68 with 16 seconds to go, but it was too little, too late.

Lackawanna College is back in action on Saturday, November 20th when they host Essex County College at the Lackawanna Student Union. The game is part of a doubleheader with the men's team, and will tip at 1:00pm. You can watch the action live at Youtube.com/LackawannaCollegeFalcons.
