CORNING, N.Y. – In a match-up of struggling teams, the SUNY Corning CC Red Barons found their offensive groove, scoring four goals, three in the first half, en route to a 4-1 win over the Lackawanna College Falcons.
Â
The Falcons (0-6-0) fell behind after the first 15 minutes, despite some solid play and back-and-forth possession between the two teams. Corning's Autumn Garrison took a shot inside the box from the right side, that
Sophia Andreoli got a hand on but couldn't quite keep out.
Â
Lackawanna College got back on terms in the 41
st minute when
Rachel Apsley and
Ashley Bruno teamed up for a nice bit of give-and-go up top. After a long clearance to midfield, Apsley was able to hold-up play and allow Bruno to run up the left channel, hitting her with a good through ball. Bruno dribbled into the box, drew two defenders, and centered a pass back to Apsley, who fired a powerful left-footed shot over the outstretched arms of the keeper for her third goal of the season, drawing the Falcons even at 1-1.
Â
The Falcons would have little time to celebrate, however, as the Red Barons (2-7-0) took the restart from midfield and flew down the pitch, as Garrison scored her second goal of the game and put Corning back on top at 2-1. A few minutes later, Corning would score again, this time off a corner kick with time winding down in the half, as an in-swinging corner from the left side found Garrison's head, who then turned that into her third goal and a 3-1 halftime lead.
Â
Garrison would add her fourth goal barely a minute into the second half, giving SUNY Corning the 4-1 advantage, which they would hold onto the rest of the match.
Â
The Falcons are back in action on Saturday October 9
th when they travel to take on Mercer County CC. Kickoff is set for 12:00pm, as the first of a doubleheader with the men's soccer teams.
