WSOC: Falcons Travel To Corning For Mid-Week Clash

10/6/21

SCRANTON, Pa. – The Lackawanna College Women's Soccer team is back in action on Wednesday 10/6 when the Falcons travel to Corning, NY to take on the SUNY Corning CC Red Barons at 3:00pm.

About The Falcons
Lackawanna College (0-5-0) comes into the game still in search of their first win on the year, but coming oh so close to finding it on Saturday 10/2 at Hagerstown CC. In that game, the Falcons, after falling behind 1-0, scored two goals in a seven-minute stretch in the first half to make it 2-1. The goals came from Rachel Apsley in the 28th minute, and a Jada Tha free-kick in the 35th minute. The Falcons held the lead for nearly forty minutes of action, but the Hawks from Hagerstown scored the equalizer in the 75th minute, and then got the game-winner in the 79th minute, to make it 3-2.

The veterans Apsley and Ashley Bruno are tied for the team-lead with two goals apiece on the year, while Tha became the third Falcon to score this year with her free-kick against Hagerstown CC.

Sophia Andreoli is mainly the keeper, but she played in the midfield against Hagerstown due to some injuries for the Falcons. Sophia has 35 saves so far this season. Emily Cherubini has seen time in between the sticks for the Falcons this year, and had 12 saves against Hagerstown CC.

The Falcons are led by first-year head coach Megan Tweedy, a Lakeland HS product and former Lackawanna College soccer player. Megan was a multi-sport athlete in her time at Lackawanna College, and has spent time coaching both AAU and HS soccer locally in NEPA.

Autumn Garrison is the leading scorer for Corning this season, with five goals and a pair of helpers on the year. She scored a brace for the Red Barons against Niagara on Monday. So did Gabrielle Coletta, who is second on the team with three goals this season. Lillian Betts and Ava Bruehwiler each have a pair of goals this season.

Anamaria Milazzo is the keeper, and has started all eight games for the Red Barons this season. Milazzo has 86 saves on 125 shots faced this year.

Kevin Weber, hired before the 2020 season, is the head coach for the Corning Red Barons. Coach Weber spent time at Elmira Notre Dame HS before coming to Corning, and helped Notre Dame to a state runner-up finish, nine sectional championship appearances, and seven conference championships.
