Box Score Scranton, PA – The Lackawanna College Women's Basketball team opened their 2019-2020 season on the road at Penn State-Hazleton. The Lady Falcons were coming off an appearance in the NJCAA Final Four last season and were looking to improve on last year's success. From the opening tip, Lackawanna wasted no time in controlling the tempo. In the first quarter, the Lady Falcons' defense quickly showed why they are ranked #7 in the NJCAA preseason poll. PSU-Hazleton was unable to get any second chances on offense and Lackawanna would take full advantage of it.
Briaunna McCullough converted on 2 of 3 three point attempts and
Keyanah Price added 5 points, as the Lady Falcons jumped out to a 26-11 lead to end the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Lackawanna continued their aggressive play with
Kyla Smith getting hot from the 3-point line. Smith converted 2 of 3 three point attempts to finish with 8 points in the quarter. The Lady Falcons would finish the second quarter and go into the half with a 50-25 lead.
Briaunna McCullough and
Kyla Smith led the way for the Lady Falcons, in the first half, with 11 points each.
At the start of the second half, Lackawanna came out pressing PSU-Hazleton on every possession. Their pressure was too much as the Lady Falcons continued to control the tempo and ultimately converted 42 points off of fast breaks.
Kyla Smith picked up where she left off in the first half, again going 2-3 from the 3-point line, while
Ciaira Loyd added 7 points. By the end of the third quarter, Lackawanna had increased their lead to 80-44.
In the fourth and final quarter,
Jasmine Lewis led the way for Lackawanna going 3-4 from the field for a total of 6 fourth quarter points.
Miliesha Troche would also get in on the scoring as she went 2-3 from the field, to finish with 5 points in the quarter. The Lady Falcons' pressure was too much for PSU-Hazleton as they recorded 16 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 blocks in the quarter. Lackawanna would go on to win the game 111-56 to move to 1-0 on the season.
Lackawanna College finished the game with a field goal percentage of 49.4% and shot 11-26 from the 3-point line. They also converted 18-34 free throws, while scoring 19 second chance points and grabbing 63 total rebounds. On the defensive side, the Lady Falcons scored 30 points off of 26 forced turnovers. The bench also played a key role in the victory by outscoring PSU-Hazleton's bench 40-20.
Lackawanna College is back in action this weekend when they travel to Monroe College to participate in the Monroe College Classic. On Saturday November 9
th they will face Monroe College at 2:00pm and then face ASA Brooklyn on Sunday November 10
th at 12:00pm.
