SCRANTON, Pa. – After a five-set classic propelled Lackawanna College women's volleyball into the Region XIX DII championship game, the Falcons ran out of gas in the final, dropping a three-set sweep to the defending champions from Monroe University, ending their 2025 campaign in the Region XIX DII tournament on Saturday inside the historic Lackawanna College Student Union gymnasium.
Â
The day started with the first semi-final of the day, as Monroe (33-6) whipped Harcum (8-8) in straight sets (25-13, 25-12, 25-10) to secure a championship appearance for the defending title holders. That set the stage for the Falcons (12-11) to take on Delaware Tech CC (12-10) in the second semi-final.
Â
Lackawanna took the first set in dominant fashion, 25-12, getting three kills from
Jana Hofmann (Colorado Springs, CO), as well as two kills each from
Neurdia Osias (Huntington Station, NY),
Ciona Braziel (Fort Worth, TX), and
Regan Freas (Louisa, VA). In set two, the visitors from DTCC took the early advantage, going ahead 4-0 early in the set, then leading by an arm's length throughout the set until they got to set point at 24-20.
Skylar Theis (Cypress, TX) posted two kills and DTCC committed a pair of attack errors to tie the set at 24. An ace from
Kaitlyn Reed (Aurora, CO) put the Falcons on their first of three set points, but DTCC kept turning them away. Despite seven kills from Hofmann in the set, Del Tech got the win on back-to-back kills to take the set 30-28 and knot things up.
Â
In the critical third set, Del Tech raced to an 8-1 lead, pushing the Falcons back on their heels. Braziel then took over for the Falcons, getting back-to-back kills and an assisted block with Hofmann to give the Falcons a three-point spurt. She'd add another kill, plus two aces from Hofmann, a kill from Freas, and then an ace from Reed to tie the set at 11-11. The Falcons took their first lead of the third set at 13-12 thanks to back-to-back kills from Hofmann, and the Falcons led 22-18 later in the set, when DTCC started to make a run. An attack error, followed by a DTCC kill and another Lackawanna error made it a 22-21 lead for the Falcons. A kill for Del Tech tied the set, but the Falcons jumped back out in front on another Braziel kill. Back-to-back hitting errors on the Falcons flipped the script and put Del Tech on the brink at set point, and a kill for the visitors made it 25-23 and put Del Tech up 2-1.
Â
In the fourth, the Falcons came alive once again, using a seven-point run to open a 20-9 lead past the midway point of the set. Osias had four kills in the set, Hofmann added three, and the Falcons won 25-12 to get to the fifth and final set.
Â
Del Tech took a 2-0 lead, but a service error and a solo stuff from Braziel tied the set early at 2-2. With Del Tech up 5-2, an error, then a Braziel ace and a kill from Freas made it 5-5. The Falcons eventually got to eight first and led 9-7 before DTCC ran off two straight kills to tie the set. An attack error, followed by a Theis ace, gave Lackawanna an 11-9 lead, and Hofmann added a pair of kills to make it 13-10, Falcons. Del Tech battled back once more to tie the set at 13-13, but a Braziel kill, followed by the capper from Hofmann, ended the match and sent Lackawanna to the championship.
Â
Hofmann finished the first match with 20 kills, while Braziel added eleven, Osias had nine, and Freas put up seven.
Â
In the championship match, the Falcons had the score tied early in each of the first two sets, but the Mustangs went on big runs to blow things open. In set one, after a Theis kill made it 6-6, Monroe went on a 10-3 burst to get ahead by seven at 16-9. The Falcons got as close at 22-15 towards the end, but Monroe scored the final three points to take set one at 25-15.
Â
In set two, the Falcons battled to a 7-7 standstill after an attack error from the Mustangs, but Monroe again hit the gas pedal and pushed past the Falcons, going on a seven-point run to move ahead at 14-7. The Falcons got within four at 15-11, but a 6-1 run made it 21-12, Monroe, powered by some impressive middle row kills and errors from the Falcons. Monroe eventually won the second set, 25-15, going ahead 2-0.
Â
Facing a tall task, the Falcons were in it very early at 3-3, but Monroe scored eleven-straight points to tear the Lackawanna squad wide open. The Falcons were gassed and emotionally drained by that point, and Monroe eventually won going away, 25-7, to secure their second straight title and end the Lackawanna season.
Â
Freas led the way with four kills, while Hofmann, Osias, and Braziel each had two kills for the match.
Â
The win sends Monroe into the Mid-Atlantic District match next weekend against the winner of the Region 20 tournament, which will be decided tomorrow. The loss ends Lackawanna College's season at 12-11 and in the Region XIX DII final for the second straight season.
