SCRANTON, Pa. – The Lackawanna College women's volleyball team won its opening match over Harcum to make it back to the Region XIX DII championship match, but the Monroe University Mustangs ousted the Falcons in straight sets (25-10, 25-22, 25-14) to end the Lackawanna season and win the region title on Saturday afternoon inside the historic Lackawanna College Student Union gymnasium.
Â
The Falcons (17-9) swept past Harcum with no real issue, beating the Bears by scores of 25-16, 25-19, and 25-20 to get past Harcum (7-13) for the third time this season and punch their ticket to the championship match. Monroe (24-5), playing in Division II after spending years at the Division I level, similarly dispatched Delaware Tech (11-10) in three sets by scores of 25-15, 25-16, and 25-11 to get to the title match.
Â
Monroe jumped out to a 5-0 lead before an
Angelique Fuentes (Miami, FL) kill got the Falcons on the board, but the Mustangs quickly broke Lackawanna's serve and kept building its lead out to 8-1 before Lackawanna called a timeout. Lackawanna got a bit more of a foothold after that timeout, getting within 10-6 thanks to a
Nadia Toth (Dalton, PA) kill. Monroe won a lengthy rally to break the serve and put it at 11-6, and the Mustangs pushed their lead out to 16-6 before a solo block from
Alasiah Carter (Coatesville, PA) got the Falcons another point. Monroe, however, had other plans, calmly expanding the lead back out and cruising to the 25-10 win in set one.
Â
Set two saw Lackawanna hang with the Mustangs early, as both teams traded points back-and-forth throughout the early proceedings, and neither side could really put any distance between themselves. Emblematic of the way the set was going, a Fuentes kill gave the Falcons a one-point lead, but an service error and a kill on an overpass swung Monroe in front, but an
Aryana Girvan (Clarion, PA) kill put it back at even at 10-all. That's where the Falcons actually started to take control, as a
Jana Hofmann (Colorado Springs, CO) serve couldn't be returned, and a hitting error against the Mustangs made it 12-10, Falcons. Another failure to return the Hofmann serve made it 13-10, Falcons, and Monroe burned its first timeout of the set. A Toth kill on the other side of the timeout made it 14-10, before a Hofmann error gave Monroe a point back. Toth got a big block at the net to give Lackawanna the 15-11 lead, and an illegal hit on Monroe gave Lackawanna a five-point spread. Another Monroe error gave the Falcons a 17-11 lead, before an error on Lackawanna made it 17-12. A Toth kill, followed by a
Neurdia Osias (Huntington Station, NY) kill, made it 19-12 and had Lackawanna rolling. But the Mustangs were undaunted, going on an impressive nine-point run to take control at 21-19 and force a Lackawanna timeout. The Falcons got it to 22-22 when Hofmann pumped a kill down the left side. Lackawanna, however, couldn't keep the momentum going, as Monroe scored the final three points, which included an ace and a kill down the left side that just snuck in to end the second set with the Mustangs ahead 2-0 in the match.
Â
The Falcons made some strides in the third set, grabbing a 5-4 lead early, but a Monroe kill off a block attempt on the left tied the set, sparking a run that catapulted the Mustangs into a lead they'd never surrender. Monroe stretched its lead out to 12-6 before the Falcons finally called a timeout, and the Mustangs never had a lead any closer than five the rest of the way, clinching the Region XIX DII championship with a 25-14 third set.
Â
The win advances Monroe to the Mid-Atlantic District Championship match next week, while the Falcons season comes to a close in the region title game. Lackawanna improved its overall record for the third straight year and had its most wins in a season since 2014.Â
