SB: Pacers Outrun Lackawanna, 9-4

An Error-Plagued Performance Hampered Lackawanna College's Prospects Against William Pace University

Box Score 3/8/23

MYRTLE BEACH, SC – Lackawanna College softball can see a theme starting to develop, as the Falcons struggled out of the gates initially once again, falling behind 3-0 after one inning against William Peace, and needing to rally from down 7-0 to try to get back into things. Unfortunately, the Falcon rally fell short, as the Pacers won 9-4 in the lone game for the Falcons on Wednesday evening in Myrtle Beach, SC.

The Falcons (3-4) were retired in 15 straight at-bats at one point, and the Pacers built a 3-0 lead after the top of the first, and a 7-0 lead after five innings of action. The Falcons eventually did rally, scoring two runs in each of the bottoms of the sixth and seventh innings, but it wasn't enough to get them over the line. Madison Maloney (Scranton, PA) was 1-for-4 with a run scored and two stolen bases, while Aria Reyes (Allentown, PA) was 1-for-2 with two RBI, both coming on a double late in the game. The Falcons committed seven errors on the night, which certainly didn't help their cause.

Two straight Falcon errors started the game, as the Pacers put their first two batters on base. After a strikeout, another error, this time in the outfield on a fly ball, allowed the first run to come across. A ground out, followed by an RBI single, pushed the next two across to make it 3-0 Pacers after the top of the first.

In the bottom frame, the Falcons got a one-out single from Skylar Borthwick (Pittston, PA), followed by a walk from Catarena Sommers (Windham, OH), but the Falcons couldn't capitalize and stranded the runners.

William Peace added another run in the top of the third, thanks to some two-out magic with a single, followed by an RBI double to left that made it 4-0.

The Falcons had four straight scoreless innings in the second, third, fourth, and fifth innings, and the Pacers finally took advantage of that with a three-spot in the top of the fifth. A lead-off walk, followed by a single, put two on with nobody out, and the Pacers got a two-run double to left to make it 6-0. Later, a one-out ground out pushed the lead to 7-0.

Two more Falcon errors put runners on with two outs in the top of the sixth, but Tess Ruschman (Easton, PA) got a ground out to get out of trouble and strand the runners. Maloney finally got the Falcons their first baserunner since the bottom of the first with a one-out single in the bottom of the sixth. She promptly stole second, then advanced to third on a groundout. With two away, Maloney stole another base, this time scoring on a steal at home to get the Falcons on the board. Sommers ended up drawing a walk, and a hit-by-pitch kept the inning alive with two baserunners. Ruschman stepped up and singled to left field, driving Sommers in and making it a 7-2 deficit. A groundout with two on ended the scoring threat.

Ruschman quickly got two outs to start the top of the seventh, but two singles, sandwiching an error, loaded the bases with two away. A single up the middle scored a pair of runners to stretch the lead back out to seven at 9-2.

With their last licks, back-to-back one-out singles from the Falcons gave them some life on the bases. A fly out was the second out, but Reyes doubled to left field to drive in a pair of runs and make it 9-4. It wasn't enough, though, as Sommers flew out to left to end the game.

The Falcons have a doubleheader ahead of themselves on Thursday, March 9th, when they take on Madonna University at 5:00pm ET, followed by a 7:00pm ET clash with Henry Ford CC.
