MERTZTOWN, Pa. – Lackawanna College women's volleyball managed to take a set, but it was still one-way traffic as Kutztown University defeated the Falcons, 3-1 (25-14, 25-13, 20-25, 25-15), on Tuesday evening at Brandywine Heights HS.
 
The Falcons (0-7) dropped the first two sets to a scorching-hot Kutztown squad, which hit at a .433 clip through the first two sets and pounded out 28 kills to accelerate past Lackawanna. But the Falcons rallied in the third set, posting nine kills and getting four aces to win the third, 25-20. Kutztown (13-2) put the hammer down in the fourth set, hitting .313 and forcing nine attack errors from the Falcons to secure the victory.
 
Kutztown (13-2) hit .327 for the match, posting nine aces and 50 kills, along with 58 digs. The Falcons hit .106 for the night, posting 34 kills and six aces, while outblocking the Bears, 5-1.
 
Kutztown put two players in double-figures in kills, with Molly Wentz going for eleven and Emily Leppert posting ten, while Lackawanna College's Sophia Bedics (Bethlehem, PA) led all players with 12 kills, her season-high, and Jana Hofmann (Colorado Springs, CO) added seven. Syriana Smith (Houston, TX) had a career-best 14 assists, while Kady Schreiner (Mountaintop, PA) added 12 helpers.
 
In set one, Kutztown led 5-2 early, but two errors, a Hofmann ace, and a kill from Nadia Toth (Dalton, PA) gave Lackawanna an early 6-5 lead. Kutztown scored six of the next seven points to go ahead 11-7, but the Falcons rallied to get within 12-10. Kutztown then hit a huge 8-1 run to blow the set open at 20-11, eventually winning at 25-14.
 
Set two saw the Falcons go up 4-2 early, helped by three kills from Bedics, Toth, and Aryanna Brown (Chester, NY). It was short-lived, however, as Kutztown blistered the Falcons with a 10-1 run, in which the Bears had five kills, two aces, and three Falcon errors. The Falcons got within 12-7, but Kutztown used an 8-2 run to blow things wide open at 20-9, cruising to the 25-13 win.
 
It was Lackawanna's turn to hit a run in set three, as the Falcons scored ten of the first 13 points to go ahead 10-3, taking advantage of five Kutztown errors, two Lackawanna aces, and a trio of kills from Bedics. Kutztown slowly whittled the deficit down, but the Falcons kept pushing it back out to seven, leading 16-9 past the midway point. The Bears started gaining on the Falcons, getting within 17-13. An error, followed by a kill and a service ace, put the Bears down 18-15, but another error put the Falcons back up four. Later, Kutztown got within two on three separate occasions, the last when it was 22-20, but the Falcons found a way, breaking serve with an error on the Bears, then using a Hofmann ace and a kill from Neurdia Osias (Huntington Station, NY) to win, 25-20.
 
Set four was back to regularly scheduled programming, with Kutztown opening a 5-2 lead, the Falcons rallying to within 5-4, and the Bears lengthening the advantage back out. The Falcons made one last push, getting within 8-7 after a kill by Brown and an error from Kutztown, but the Bears widened the lead back out to four, and Lackawanna would never get closer than three the rest of the way, as Kutztown finished it off at 25-15.
 
Bedics had 12 kills on .256 hitting, along with five digs, while Hofmann had seven kills on .043 hitting and a team-high seven digs, along with two aces. Toth finished with five kills on .455 hitting, while Ciona Braziel (Fort Worth, TX) added three kills and a team-high four total blocks. Smith had 14 assists and six digs, while Schreiner added 12 assists, two digs, and one ace.
 
The Falcons are back to action on Saturday, September 26^th, when West Chester University comes to town. First serve is set for 1:00pm ET inside the historic Lackawanna College Student Union gymnasium.
