MECHANICSBURG, Pa. – Lackawanna College women's volleyball fell in a pair of three-set sweeps against Messiah University and Notre Dame of Maryland University on Saturday morning and afternoon in a tri-match at Messiah.
 
The Falcons (0-4) were sloppy in both matches, accumulating 26 hitting and receiving errors in match one against Messiah, and then 31 more hitting and receiving errors in match two against NDMD.
 
Against Messiah (5-1), the Falcons hit just .061, while Messiah hit .174. The Falcons had eight aces, while Messiah had nine, and Messiah posted 39 assists to just 22 from Lackawanna. Sophia Bedics (Bethlehem, PA) led the way with eight kills on .241 hitting, while Jana Hofmann (Colorado Springs, CO) had six kills and four aces, to go with 13 digs. Nadia Toth (Dalton, PA) added five kills, while Adalee Rivera Rosado (Guyama, Puerto Rico) posted a pair of kills, 13 digs, and seven assists.
 
In game two against NDMD (2-3), the Falcons had more hitting errors than kills (24-23), hitting at -0.010 for the match against the Gators. NDMD had eight aces and hit .186 for the match. Bedics led the way again, posting eight kills on .160 hitting, along with three digs. Ciona Braziel (Fort Worth, TX) had four kills, while Hofmann and Regan Freas (Louisa, VA) each added three kills. Hofmann had eight digs, while Rosado Rivera posted eleven assists.
 
Against the hosts in the opener, the Falcons led 5-4 on back-to-back kills from Braziel and Toth but they fell behind after Messiah went on a scorching 13-1 run to completely flip the game, eventually winning 25-14 in the first set. Lackawanna was behind 18-15 in set two, but Messiah scored six of the next eight points to go ahead, 24-17, pushing the Falcons to the brink and winning on a service error at 25-18. That set up a wild third set.
 
Lackawanna stormed ahead to the first five points, getting four-straight aces from Hofmann, but Messiah bounced back to get within 5-4. The Falcons later led 10-5, but Messiah scored six of the next seven points to tie the set at 11-11. An error, followed by a Toth kill, put Lackawanna back up two, but the Messiah Falcons rattled off seven of the next eight points to flip the game back to their favor at 18-14. Trailing 19-16, Lackawanna rallied with a run of its own, scoring seven of the next eight points to once again flip the match, getting three kills from Bedic, a kill from Toth, and three errors from Messiah in the run. Trailing 23-20, Messiah rallied with three-straight kills to tie the set, but a kill by Bedics put the Falcons on the brink. Lackawanna had set point three straight times, but couldn't deliver, and Messiah eventually tied the set at 26, then used an error and a kill to close out the match at 28-26.
 
Lackawanna led 5-4 early in set one against NDMD on kills from Neurdia Osias (Huntington Station, NY), Toth, and Braziel, but the Gators ran off eight in a row to go from down one to up 12-5. Six of those eight points were errors from the Falcons. The Gators would go on to lead 16-7 at one point, and Lackawanna would never get closer than five, eventually falling 25-16 in the first.
 
The Falcons had a strong start in set two, leading 9-4 through kills from Bedics and Osias, as well as two aces by Skylar Theis (Cypress Park, TX), but the Gators slowly closed the gap, eventually using a 4-0 spurt to tie the set at 12-12. Lackawanna battled into the lead, taking a 16-15 advantage, but another killer run from NDMD yielded seven of the next eight points to the Gators to make it 22-17. Lackawanna wouldn't get closer than three points and the Gators won 25-20 to go ahead 2-0.
 
In set three, NDMD led early, building a 7-3 advantage. The Falcons trailed 14-9 midway through the set before hitting a 4-0 run, pushed forward by three errors and a Bedics kill to get within 14-13. The teams would trade points, but the Falcons could never seem to get closer than two points down, and NDMD eventually used a 7-3 run to push ahead at 23-18. An error got the Falcons back on serve, down 23-19, but a kill, followed by an attack error on Lackawanna ended the set at 25-19 and gave the three-set sweep to Notre Dame of Maryland.
 
Lackawanna is still searching for its first win of the season, and the Falcons will have to regroup with an important clash on Tuesday, September 15^th, when East Stroudsburg University comes to Scranton for a first-ever match-up with Lackawanna. First serve is set for 6:00pm ET inside the historic Lackawanna College Student Union gymnasium.
