WVB: Efficient Shepherd Dispatches Lackawanna College In Straight Sets

The Rams Hit Over .400 For The Match And Forced Errors From The Falcons On Saturday

10/3/26

SCRANTON, Pa. – Visiting Shepherd had no issues dispatching Lackawanna College women's volleyball, as the Rams blew past the Falcons in straight sets (25-19, 25-13, 25-9) on Saturday morning inside the historic Lackawanna College Student Union.

Both teams had played the night before, and both teams had suffered losses, with the Falcons falling to Shippensburg and Shepherd falling at East Stroudsburg, but the Rams (14-2) looked much better on Saturday morning, hitting .500 in the first set and a blistering .429 for the match, while the Falcons (0-10) struggled with 24 hitting errors and six service errors. Lackawanna hit -.113 for the day, and the Falcons were blocked 6-0 at the net.

Jana Hofmann (Colorado Springs, CO) led the Falcons with seven kills, hitting .136 for the match, while posting six digs. Ciona Braziel (Fort Worth, TX) had three kills, while Nadia Toth (Dalton, PA) posted a pair of kills and two digs. Adalee Rosado Rivera (Guyama, Puerto Rico) had three aces and six digs, and Syriana Smith (Houston, TX) had five assists.

Shepherd wasted no time in the first set, leaping out to a 10-3 lead, thanks to four kills, four attack errors, and three aces. The Rams still led big, 14-5, when the Falcons went on a bit of a run, scoring six-straight points to get back within three, highlighted by kills from Regan Freas (Louisa, VA), Hofmann, and Braziel, getting to a 14-11 deficit.

Shepherd maintained the lead, but the Falcons got within two at 19-17 after a kill from Hofmann and an ace from Toth. But, as has been the problem for the Falcons, the opposition found a way to close out the set, scoring four-straight points to get back up six, then finished the first set at 25-19.

The visitors went up big early once again in set two, racing to a 9-3 lead, but the Falcons scored three points to get back within 9-6. Later, at 12-9, Shepherd scored six points in a row, helped by three-straight kills and three-straight attack errors, leading to an 18-9 advantage. The Falcons fell further behind at 23-11, before scoring a pair of points on a Hofmann kill and a Rosado Rivera ace, but the Rams scored the final two points to win 25-13.

In set three, the Falcons were tied at 2, then within two points at 5-3 after a Hofmann kill, but Shepherd rattled off five-straight points to go ahead 10-3, then hit a 10-1 run to go from 10-5 to a 20-6 lead in the blink of an eye. The Falcons couldn't muster much more offense, and Shepherd put the match away at 25-9.

Lackawanna College women's volleyball has a pair of away matches up next, as the Falcons travel to Millersville University on Friday, October 9th, for a 7:00pm ET clash with the Marauders, followed by a Saturday afternoon match on October 10th at West Chester University at 1:00pm ET. The Falcons won't be home again until Friday, October 16th, when Lock Haven University comes to Scranton for a 6:00pm ET match-up.
