WVB: Falcons Earn Tri-Match Split Against Beaver County, Cecil College

Lackawanna Knocked Off CCBC To Win Its First Match Of The Year, But Fell In Four Sets To The Hosts From Cecil In Match Two

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 8/30/25

NORTH EAST, Md. -- Lackawanna College women's volleyball went 1-for-2 in tri-match action on the weekend, grabbing its first win of the season over CC of Beavery County in a sweep before falling to the hosts, Cecil College, in four sets at the Cecil College gymnasium in Maryland.

In the sweep (25-19, 25-18, 25-14) over Beaver County (0-2), the Falcons (1-2) had to sweat a bit, but managed to play well down the stretch to pull away for the win against the Titans.

In set one, the Falcons broke serve for a point to get in front, and a persistent Ciona Braziel (Forth Worth, TX) got the Falcons going with a kill to quickly make it 2-0. Lackawanna quickly put some distance between itself and the Titans, stretching the early advantage out to 8-2, a run that was highlighted by some errors from CCBC, as well as kills from Neurdia Osias (Huntington Station, NY) and Aryanna Brown (Chester, NY).

Beaver began to chip away in the first set, getting to within 13-10, before a Braziel kill off a set from Ellania Morales (Wharton, NJ) deflected off a block. An error on the serve gave a point back to Beaver, but the Titans gave the point right back on their own service error, and a hitting error put the Falcons ahead at 16-11. Those points were the first two of a 5-0 spurt for the Falcons, as CCBC kept committing attack errors. The lead reached 21-12, but the Titans began to push back. At set point, down 24-16, the Titans scored three straight points to fight off the finish, using some aces to give themselves life. Lackawanna sealed the first set victory when Osias pounced on a bad overpass to hammer home the point in the middle.

The next set was very even, with both teams trading points up to a 15-15 tie. Beaver scored two points in a row to go ahead at 17-15, but the Falcons erupted to score ten of the next eleven points. Jana Hofmann (Colorado Springs, CO) got serve back on a great kill from the left side, and an error on Beaver knotted the set at 17. The Falcons misplayed a ball to give the Titans a brief 18-17 lead, but Hofmann scored again from the left side to tie things again at 18-18. Regan Freas (Louisa, VA) steered the ship from there, getting an ace to nose the Falcons in front, and then being helped by a tandem block up front to make it 20-18, Falcons. After a timeout, Lackawanna got right back to work, rattling off the next five points. Kaitlyn Reed (Aurora, CO) registered a kill, followed by back-to-back hitting errors from Beaver County. Reed set up Braziel for a kill to get the Falcons to set point, and Hofmann finished it off to put the Falcons up 2-0 in the match.

Lackawanna came out on fire in set three, jumping ahead by a big margin early. Another Hofmann kill started the scoring, followed by a Brown swing after an excellent dig by Reed. The back-to-back points were the start of the initial 8-1 flurry from the Falcons. Beaver eventually fought back to within four points three separate times, but two service errors and a kill from Osias denied the Titans a chance to string some points together. Up 18-13, Brown aced a serve, the second point in a game closing 7-1 run for the Falcons. In that run, Hofmann got a kill to get the Falcons to 23-14, Freas twirled a spinning attack for a kill to get to match point, and Skylar Theis (Cypress, TX) sealed the first match win with an ace.

Against the hosts from Cecil (2-0), Lackawanna was in a battle from start to finish, but the Seahawks used late runs to knock off the Falcons in four sets (30-28, 25-22, 26-28, 25-21).

A tight set one saw plenty of fireworks, as the Falcons took an early lead, got ahead by as much as six points at 11-5, and led 20-16 late in the first set. Cecil never blinked, however, rallying with four straight points to tie the set at 20-all. After a timeout from Lackawanna, a hitting error restored the slim Lackawanna margin, and another attack error put Lackawanna ahead at 22-20. Two points later, Lackawanna was ahead 23-21 with Theis serving. A wild deflection towards the net was punched down by the middle blocker from Cecil for a kill, and the Seahawks tied the set after a kill attempt went long from the Falcons. Two straight overpasses from Cecil eventually led to an excellent kill from Braziel to put Lackawanna on the brink, but the Seahawks got around the blocks from the Falcons to tie the set again and send it to extras.

Fighting for extra points, Lackawanna was on set point twice, getting two huge kills from Braziel, but Cecil answered both times. After Cecil went ahead on a kill at 27-26, Lackawanna called a timeout to reset. Out of the break, Reed dummied a pass and popped an attempt over the net to tie the set again. A long attempt from Cecil put the Falcons on the doorstep again, but an attempt on the left side beat the block and tied things at 28-28. A serve hit the net and fell on the Lackawanna side, putting Cecil on the brink, and the Seahawks finally closed out the first set on a ball that snuck over the net and dove just in front of the back line defense.

In set two, it was Cecil that took the early lead, getting up by a 14-5 margin at the midway point, thanks to a combination of excellent attack and some Lackawanna defensive lapses. A deflected attempt off a block gave the Falcons a point, and a Freas kill forced a timeout at 14-7. Cecil treaded water up seven, but kept giving the Falcons a chance to come back with service errors. Down 17-11, a Brown kill on the left side sparked Lackawanna on a mini-run, closing within three points at 18-15.

The Falcons would hit another run to go from 20-16 down to 20-19, punctuated by a Morales ace. Unfortunately for Lackawanna, one point was as close as the Falcons would get for the second set, with a kill finding the back row giving Cecil the 2-0 lead.

Set three saw Lackawanna get off to a good start, jumping ahead 3-0 early, and pushing ahead to 6-1 when Brown dropped a kill from the left side through a block. Cecil fought back, getting to within two points, and the set sat at a two-or-three-point deficit for the next several points. Leading 11-8, Lackawanna went up four on a Braziel kill from the middle, and, after a net violation, the Falcons went up four again at 13-9 on a cross-court kill from Hofmann. An ace from Morales pushed the Falcons back up to a five-point lead, but Cecil rallied to win seven of the next eight points to take at 16-15 advantage.

Later, with Cecil five points away at 20-18, it was Lackawanna's turn to rally. A phenomenal diving dig from Brown led to a Hofmann kill to get the Falcons within a point. A combo block at the net from Hofmann and Osias tied the set at 20-20. Hofmann posted another kill to get the Falcons in front, and Braziel aced a serve to give the Falcons the 22-20 lead. Later, the Falcons led 23-21, but Cecil scored two straight to tie things up. The Falcons got to set point after a hitting error, but a service error on the Falcons guaranteed another set going extras. The Falcons had set point three times in the extra point period, eventually getting Cecil to submit at 28-26, when a pass error hit the antenna.

In the fourth set, neither team could really break away from each other all the way to the end of the set. With a 20-18 advantage, Cecil finally got its first three-point lead when the Falcons made an error on a reception. Osias powered a kill to get back within 21-19, and a hitting error made it 21-20. But that would prove to be the last gasps from Lackawanna, as the Seahawks rattled off four of the final five points, ending the match with a bevy of swings from the left side and cashing in for the four-set win.

Lackawanna College will have a few days off before getting back to action on Thursday, September 4th, when the Falcons travel down the interstate to Hazleton to take on the Penn State Hazleton Nittany Lions in non-region play. The match is set for a 7:00pm ET start inside the PSU Hazleton Physical Education Building gymnasium.
