BEL AIR, Md. – The sets were tight and competitive, but the Fighting Owls from Harford CC proved to be too tough, sweeping past the Falcons, 3-0 (25-21, 2-521, 25-19), on Friday night in the season opener for Lackawanna College at APG Federal Credit Union Arena on the road.
Â
The Falcons (0-1) battled throughout the match with the Owls (1-1). After falling behind by a pair of points in the first set, Lackawanna tied it up at 6-6 on back-to-back kills from
Regan Freas (Louisa, VA) and
Aryanna Brown (Chester, NY). Unfortunately, a pair of service aces got Harford the advantage back at 8-6.
Â
Harford scored two of the next three points to get a 10-7 advantage, then dropped another service ace on the Falcons to go ahead by four. The lead ballooned out to 15-8, as the Owls found ways around the blocks from Lackawanna, and used some blocking of their own to smother the Falcons' attack. Harford eventually stretched the lead to double-digits at 20-10, but the Falcons scored five of the next six points to get it to 21-15, punctuated by a
Neurdia Osias (Huntington Station, NY) kill and a
Ellania Morales (Wharton, NJ) service ace.
Â
Harford got it to 23-16, but four-straight hitting errors let the Falcons rally to within 23-20. A mistake by Lackawanna gave Harford a kill and put the Owls on set point. A kill from
Jana Hofmann (Colorado Springs, CO) gave the Falcons serve, but Harford broke it and won the set on a kill from the left side.
Â
In set two, the teams were tied through the first six points, when
Ciona Braziel (Fort Worth, TX) earned a service ace to give the Falcons a brief lead at 4-3. Harford answered with back-to-back kills, but served long for an error, tying the second set at 5-all early.
Â
Harford scored a few points in a row to get some breathing space at 9-6, and held a three-point advantage at 13-10, when Brown smashed a kill on the left side to get the Falcons within two. A mishit gave serve back to Harford, but another Brown kill kept Lackawanna hanging around at 14-12.
Â
The Owls scored twice to force a timeout at 16-12, and Osias took advantage of a bad overpass to make it 16-13. Brown scored an ace to get the Falcons back to within two, but Harford answered with a kill that deflected high off the block and landed in the back row. Every time it seemed like Lackawanna might make a run, Harford was there to snuff it out. The Owls won a long rally at 18-15 to extend it to a four-point advantage and later went up five at 21-16 on a great kill at the net. Trailing 24-17, Lackawanna fought off set point four times, using a solo stuff and an ace from Braziel, as well as back-to-back hitting errors from Harford. After a timeout, Braziel's service went just long, and Harford took a 2-0 lead.
Â
After Harford jumped out to the lead in set three, the Falcons got within one at 12-11 thanks to another ace from Braziel. Harford never blinked, however, and scored six of the next seven points to go ahead at 18-12. Hofmann put together back-to-back points with a kill and an ace, but Harford earned serve back and went back in front 20-14.
Â
Skylar Theis (Cypress, TX) earned an ace to get the Falcons back within 20-16, but a kill found the back line to get Harford the serve again at 21-16. A receiving error made it 22-16, and a kill put Harford just two points away from the match victory. A service error kept the Falcons alive, and a net violation on a long rally put the Falcons within five at 23-18. Another error on the Owls got the Falcons within four at 23-19, but back-to-back kills put the match away to give Harford the sweep.
Â
Lackawanna College will be right back to work on Saturday, August 30
th, with a tri-match on the road at Cecil College in North East, MD. The Falcons will face Community College of Beaver County first at 2:00pm ET, followed by a match with the hosts, the Cecil Seahawks, at 4:00pm ET.
