SCRANTON, Pa. – Lackawanna College women's volleyball couldn't hang on to four-point lead in the fifth set, as Harcum College scored 12 of the final 15 points to stun the Falcons in a 3-2 thriller (25-20, 21-25, 25-22, 20-25, 17-15) on Tuesday evening in a Region XIX Division II contest at the historic Lackawanna College Student Union gymnasium.
Â
The Falcons (7-9, 3-2) had just completed a miraculous turnaround, bouncing back in the fourth set from a 15-7 hole to win it, 25-20, and force a fifth and final frame. Lackawanna leaped out to the early lead thanks to four aces and was three points away from clinching the match at 12-8. After its final timeout, Harcum (5-5, 1-3) rattled off five straight points, taking advantage of back-to-back blocks, two- straight Falcons' attack errors, and an ace. Lackawanna responded to eventually force it beyond 15 points, and a
Jana Hofmann (Colorado Springs, CO) kill put the Falcons on the brink at 15-14. The Bears never blinked, however, scoring three straight points and pulling off the massive win on the road.
Â
The first two sets were evenly matched, with Harcum pulling away for the set one win, and then the Falcons gently pulling away for the set two victory. In the third set, Harcum took a 12-8 lead, only to see the Falcons rattle off an eight-point surge to go ahead at 16-12, highlighted by an ace from
Kaitlyn Reed (Aurora, CO) and four consecutive kills from Hofmann. After a timeout and trading some points to get to 18-14, Harcum swung the match back to itself, going on a seven-point swing to leap in front at 21-18. Lackawanna got to within 24-22, but the Bears took a commanding 2-1 advantage into the fourth frame.
Â
In that fourth stanza, the Bears were all business, early, building a 9-2 lead and eventually getting up 15-7. Ten points away from a disaster, the Falcons rallied. A kill from
Skylar Theis (Cypress, TX), followed by an ace from
Ellania Morales (Wharton, NJ), started to plant the seeds. After the teams traded errors and the Falcons were still down six at 16-10,
Neurdia Osias (Huntington Staton, NY) converted on an overpass, the first of four straight kills for the Falcons to get within 16-14. Later, down 18-16, Lackawanna made another push, surging in front thanks to two more Hofmann kills and a hitting error from Harcum. After the teams went back-and-forth, a Harcum net violation made it 20-20. That was the first of six-straight Lackawanna points, with a Hofmann kill putting the Falcons in front, followed by four straight errors from Harcum to end the fourth set and set the stage for the finish.
Â
Hofmann finished with a team-high 24 kills, Theis and Osias each added eight kills. Reed had four kills, four aces, and 26 assists, while Morales put up four kills, two aces, and 19 assists.
