WVB: Lackawanna Defeats Del Tech, Falls To Brookdale In Tri-Match Action

The Falcons Beat Delaware Tech In A Region XIX DII Battle, Then Dropped A Five-Setter To Brookdale

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 10/4/25

NEWARK, Del. – Needing a boost in a big spot, Lackawanna College women's volleyball got a season-best 13 kills from Neurdia Osias (Huntington Staton, NY) to help pace the Falcons to a three-set sweep (25-19,25-23, 25-20) over Delaware Tech CC on Saturday morning, helping the Falcons earn a split in tri-match action down in Delaware.

Lackawanna (7-8) lost its second match in a five-set thriller against Brookdale CC (31-29, 25-22, 17-25, 17-25, 15-12).

Against Del Tech, the Falcons held an early lead in the first set, getting to set point at 24-10, before a nine-point run from Del Tech tightened the gap, thanks to some Lackawanna mistakes. Eventually, a hitting error on DTCC gave the Falcons the 25-19 victory.

Set two saw the Falcons rocket out in front again, this time scoring the set's first seven points. Lackawanna scored two errors from DTCC, back-to-back kills from Regan Freas (Louisa, VA) and Kaitlyn Reed (Aurora, CO), then three aces from Ellania Morales (Wharton, NJ).

Del Tech eventually closed the gap, getting within 16-14 at one point. Reed pushed a kill through to help the Falcons get back up by three, and Lackawanna scored two more points on a net violation and a kill on an overpass by Freas. Delaware Tech got within one at 24-23, but a hitting error on the home side gave the Falcons a 25-23 win.

The Falcons went back and forth with DTCC in the third set, eventually taking a 19-13 lead. Del Tech scored two straight points to get within four, then later got to 20-17. A Reed kill made it 21-17, then Jana Hofmann (Colorado Springs, CO) earned one of her four aces of the match to make it 22-17. Later, a Skylar Theis (Cypress, TX) kill made it 23-19, and, after a DTCC point, Reed put the Falcons on the doorstep at 24-20. Reed sealed the deal with an ace to give the Falcons the big win in Region XIX Division II play.

Against Division III Brookdale, the Falcons were on the doorstep to win set one, but the Jersey Blues forced extra points, eventually pulling ahead to win 31-29. The second set was similar, and finished much the same, with Brookdale pulling away late to take a 2-0 lead.

In the third and fourth sets, Lackawanna College managed to jump out to big leads and run away for the 25-17 wins in each, forcing the fifth set standoff with Brookdale. The fifth was tight through the first few points, but Brookdale took advantage of Lackawanna mistakes to rocket out to the 8-3 advantage. The Jersey Blues extended that lead out to 10-4, when the Falcons finally started to wake up. Some Brookdale mistakes, coupled with a Hofmann kill, had the Birds within 11-8. Another Brookdale mistake brought the Falcons within two at 11-9, and the teams traded service errors to make it 12-10, Jersey Blues. Another mistake made it a one-point margin at 12-11, and the Falcons even tied the set at 12-all on an overpass kill from Hofmann. A service error gave Brookdale the lead back at 13-12, and the Jersey Blues got two straight kills to earn the win at 15-12.

Lackawanna College is now 3-1 in Region XIX Division II play, tied with Delaware Tech CC atop the region, but behind DTCC because of overall record. The Falcons will face Division II Harcum College on Tuesday, October 7th, in a home contest. First serve is set for 6:00pm ET inside the historic Lackawanna College Student Union gymnasium.
