BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lackawanna College women's volleyball put up a fight through the first two sets, but top-ten Northampton CC eventually ran away from the Falcons for the four-set victory (22-25, 27-25, 25-13, 25-14) on Thursday night in non-region play at the Arthur L. Scott Spartan Center at Northampton.
Â
The Falcons (8-10) were dynamite through the first set, going toe-to-toe with the Division III #7 Spartans (23-1). With the teams knotted at 22-22, the Falcons managed to score the final three points for the set one win. Lackawanna pulled ahead on a combo block by
Aryanna Brown (Chester, NY) and
Neurdia Osias (Huntington Station, NY), got to set point on an ace from
Kaitlyn Reed (Aurora, CO), then won it on a kill from
Jana Hofmann (Colorado Springs, CO).
Â
In set two, both teams were firing back-and-forth once more, tied at 11-11, when Brown rose up for a kill on the left side. She came down awkwardly and had to leave the game with injury. In her absence, the Falcons performed valiantly, taking a 20-17 lead at one point on an Osias kill down the middle, but a service error gave the Spartans some life, and Northampton closed the gap and tied the set at 20-20.
Â
With Northampton up 22-21, Lackawanna scored on an
Ellania Morales (Wharton, NJ) kill, then
Mekenzie Dineen (Wilmington, DE) got an ace to put the Falcons up 23-22. An error tied the set at 23-all, and Northampton kept a point advantage past the 25-point mark. A kill down the middle beat the Lackawanna defense to give Northampton the advantage, and a monster block at the net rebounded off the Lackawanna defense and ricocheted out of bounds, giving the Spartans the second set win.
Â
Despite the third set score, Lackawanna College came out with a strong start in the frame, leading 4-1 thanks to an error from Northampton, and three kills from Hofmann and Reed. Northampton later tied the set at 7-7, then got an ace to take the lead. That was the start of a 6-0 run to go ahead at 12-7, as Northampton feasted on overpasses and mistakes from the Falcons. Northampton eventually won 25-13 to take control heading into the fourth set.
Â
Lackawanna didn't go quietly in the final frame, going ahead 2-0 initially and leading 5-4, but the Spartans ran off four-straight points to get ahead at 8-5. Lackawanna got within 8-7, but a service error handed serve back to Northampton. A 4-0 run had the Spartans up 12-7, but the Falcons scored another pair to get within three at 12-9. Lackawanna stayed in the set, pulling to within 16-12 on an Osias kill down the middle, but Northampton hit the gas and ended the match on a 9-2 run, scoring the final seven points to put the Falcons away.
Â
Lackawanna College will get back home for a pair of matches this weekend in tri-match action, hosting Bergen CC and Atlantic Cape CC on Saturday, October 18
