BLUE BELL, Pa. – A crucial scoring drought at the end of the game spelled doom for Lackawanna College men's basketball, as the Falcons dropped a 72-66 decision on the road against Division III #6 Montgomery County CC in cross-divisional Region XIX action on Wednesday evening at the Montco gymnasium.
Â
The Falcons (1-2) had the game tied at 57-57 with just over five minutes remaining, when some excellent defense created the offense.
Evan Laybourn-Boddie (Wilkes-Barre, PA) poked the ball loose on the right wing, then saved it behind his back before the ball went out of bounds. The save went to forward
Noah McIntosh (Philadelphia, PA), who quickly tossed the ball down the floor to an open
Shawnn Smith (Philadelphia, PA), who scored a lay-up through contact to make it 59-57. Smith hit the subsequent free throw, and the Falcons held a 60-57 lead with five minutes to go.
Â
The Mustangs (2-0) were undaunted by the deficit, however, outscoring Lackawanna 15-6 down the stretch. Montco hit two free throws to cut the deficit to one, forced a turnover, then rebounded a missed free throw and scored to take a 61-60 lead with 4:16 to play. A Lackawanna three-pointer missed, and Montco made the Falcons pay on the other end, hitting a corner three-pointer with under four minutes to go that made it 64-60. Another empty Lackawanna possession led to two more free throws that stretched the Montco lead to 66-60, but a Smith jumper in transition with under three to go cut the Lackawanna deficit to just four. The Falcons stole the inbounds, but missed two contested lay-ups that would have made it a one-possession game. Montco made them pay again with a long three-pointer that put the Mustangs up seven at 69-62 with just over two minutes to go. The Falcons wouldn't get much closer the rest of the way.
Â
Lackawanna College has a few days off before getting back to action on Saturday, November 9
th, when the Falcons will travel to Syracuse, NY to participate in the Lazer Tip-Off Classic at SUNY Onondaga. Lackawanna will tip-off at 3:00pm ET on Saturday against Jefferson CC.
