NEWARK, NJ –
Jayla South poured in a career-high 42 points, and Lackawanna College women's basketball topped Essex County College by a 113-76 final score on Tuesday night in Region XIX DII women's basketball action at Essex County College.
Â
The Falcons (4-2, 1-0) played suffocating defense and got out in transition early and often against the Wolverines (1-3, 0-2), and South (Long Pond, PA) was the beneficiary, scoring 21 points in the second quarter alone on her way to her career-best 42. South hit six three-point shots, including three straight in the second quarter, which ignited a Lackawanna offense that had 55 points by halftime. The scoring didn't stop after the interval, as the Falcons had 27 points in the third, and 31 points in the fourth. Lackawanna had 14 made three-pointers on the night.
Ania Crocker (Freeport, NY) added 26 points, while
Saraiah Franklin (Philadelphia) and
Salote Franklin (Philadelphia, PA) each had 14 points.
Â
South's 42 points are the most points scored by a women's basketball player at Lackawanna since Keona Dessau scored 44 on November 30
th, 2000, at Luzerne County CC. The 113 points that the Falcons scored is the most that Lackawanna women's basketball has scored in one game since dropping 115 points on Mercer County CC back on December 3
rd, 2019.
Â
Lackawanna will now turn its attention to an important Region XIX DII home opener, as the Falcons will host the Division II #13 Harcum College Bears inside the historic Lackawanna College Student Union gymnasium on Thursday, November 21
st. Tip is scheduled for 5:00pm ET.
