WBB: #17 Niagara Too Much For Lackawanna

The Thunder Wolves Were Dominant From Start To Finish, Overwhelming Lackawanna With Suffocating Defense

Box Score 11/17/24

SANBORN, NY – Lackawanna women's basketball couldn't quite keep pace with SUNY Niagara, as the #17 Thunder Wolves took down the Falcons by an 87-46 margin on Sunday afternoon in the SUNY Niagara Tip-Off Classic.

The Falcons (3-2) got 24 points from Salote Franklin (Philadelphia, PA), but it was tough sledding right at the outset, as the Thunder Wolves (7-0) used suffocating defense to keep the Falcons off the board for the first 5:40 of the game. Sophia Summa (Dunmore, PA) hit a long two-pointer on the left wing that got the Falcons on the board, making it just a 5-2 deficit for Lackawanna. The deficit expanded to 11-2 with 2:28 to play in the first before the Falcons scored again, this time on a Franklin jumper from just beyond the free-throw line that made it 11-4.

Niagara held an 18-7 lead after one, and started expanding the lead in the early parts of the second quarter. Franklin hit a three that cut the Lackawanna deficit to 21-12 a little over three minutes into the quarter, and Ania Crocker (Freeport, NY) scored on an acrobatic lay-up to make it 21-14 with just over six minutes to go in the quarter. The Falcons had it at seven points again when Jayla South (Long Pond, PA) hit a long jumper to cut it to 23-16, and a turnover on the other end from Niagara had the Falcons potentially in business to try to make it a game. Lackawanna missed a three, and back-to-back buckets from the Thunder Wolves pushed their lead back over double-digits. The Falcons would only get as close as nine the rest of the quarter, and Niagara expanded their lead out to 20, hitting a three-pointer as time expired to take a 40-20 lead at halftime.

Niagara outscored Lackawanna 27-10 in the third quarter, and 20-16 in the fourth quarter to put distance between itself and the Falcons.

Lackawanna will look to regroup when the Falcons begin Region XIX DII play on Tuesday, November 19th, as Lackawanna travels to Newark, NJ to take on Essex County College. Tip is scheduled for 5:00pm ET inside the Essex County College gymnasium, and the game will be the first of a doubleheader, with the men's teams competing afterwards at 7:00pm ET. Lackawanna won its only meeting with Essex last season, a 106-48 victory at home last December.
