BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Facing a 2-1 deficit in its first match, Lackawanna College women's volleyball dug deep, came back for the five-set win, then took a four-set victory to sweep in tri-match action on Saturday afternoon at Northampton CC. Lackawanna defeated Delaware Tech in five sets (25-10, 18-25, 22-25, 25-16, 15-7), then knocked off Northampton CC in four (25-16, 25-22, 22-25, 25-12).
Â
The Falcons (13-4, 4-0) knocked off Delaware Tech CC (8-5, 2-2) in their first match of the day, despite falling behind 2-1 through the first three sets. In set four, the Falcons opened a 12-8 advantage highlighted by a
Jana Hofmann (Colorado Springs, CO) kill that forced a timeout from Del Tech. Later, with a 14-10 lead, Hofmann got an ace that made it 15-10, then Del Tech couldn't return a kill attempt, and the Falcons expanded their lead to 16-10. A hitting error gave the Falcons 17, and a kill from
Aryana Girvan (Clarion, PA) made it 18-10. Another kill from
Nadia Toth (Dalton, PA) gave the Falcons 19, and a kill from
Angelique Fuentes (Miami, FL) gave Lackawanna a 20-10 lead and forced another Del Tech timeout. Lackawanna eventually won the set at 25-16 when a Del Tech serve went long, forcing a fifth set.
Â
In that fifth set against Delaware Tech, Lackawanna took an early 3-1. With Fuentes serving, an ace made it 4-1, forcing a timeout. On the restart, a Girvan kill made it 5-1, and another Fuentes ace pushed it to 6-1, Falcons. Girvan got a kill on a bad overpass that made it 7-1, and then Del Tech finally got a point to stop the bleeding on a block at the net. A bad serve gave the Falcons the point right back at 8-2, but Del Tech would hit a mini spurt that got the match within four at 9-5. A kill attempt from
Alasiah Carter (Coatesville, PA) clipped the net and dropped in, but a serve error gave Del Tech a point that held the set at 10-6. A Carter kill made it 11-6, and Lackawanna scored four of the next five points to win the match, winning the match on an ace from Hofmann.
Â
In match two, Lackawanna took on a Northampton CC squad that had beaten the Falcons 19 straight times, dating back to 2010. Hofmann's great play on serve and at the net helped Lackawanna open a 2-0 lead, but Northampton (11-5) battled back to win the third set at 25-22. Rather than live through a tight fourth set and deal with another five-set match, the Falcons hit the gas pedal in set four, rocketing out leads of 5-0 and 10-3, forcing Northampton to burn a timeout. The teams traded points out of the timeout, but Lackawanna kept opening the margin further, getting the lead to double digits at 15-5. Northampton got it to 16-9, but a Hofmann kill was smoked from the left side to give the Falcons serve back. A hitting error on Northampton made it 19-10, which forced another Spartan timeout. A Carter kill made it 20-10, and Lackawanna won five of the next seven points to close things out, winning the match, appropriately, on another Hofmann laser down the left side.
Â
The wins mean Lackawanna remains atop of the Region XIX DII standings at 4-0, and now, coupled with the Lehigh Carbon CC loss to Harrisburg Area, the Falcons are 7-1 in EPAC play, first in the conference. Lackawanna College has another EPAC and Region XIX DII contest on Tuesday, October 8
th, when the Falcons travel to take on Harcum College in Bryn Mawr, PA. First serve is set for a 6:30pm ET start.
