WVB: Hagerstown Knocks Off Lackawanna on Sophomore Day

The Falcons Fought Hard Early, But The Hawks Eventually Pulled Away To Take The Win

Box Score 10/18/24

SCRANTON, Pa. – Lackawanna women's volleyball ran out of gas late, as visiting Hagerstown CC topped the Falcons, 3-1 (18-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-15) on Friday evening inside the Lackawanna College Student Union gymnasium.

The Falcons (15-7) celebrated their eight sophomores in front of a good-sized crowd and came out of the gates swinging hard. Alasiah Carter (Coatesville, PA) and Aryana Girvan (Clarion, PA) got the Falcons going early, as Lackawanna built a lead and steadily pulled away. Hagerstown (16-4) didn't help itself, making errors, including a decisive run where Jana Hofmann (Colorado Springs, CO) had three straight aces to push the Falcons on to victory in the first set at 25-18.

Set two was much tighter, with Lackawanna holding a steady lead somewhere between one and three points throughout the frame. Lackawanna extended to a 20-17 lead after a big solo block at the net by Nadia Toth (Dalton, PA), but Hagerstown stormed back with four straight kills to take the 21-20 lead. A Girvan kill tied it up, but a violation by the Falcons at the net gave the visitors the lead back, and a kill through a middle block made it 23-21. A Hofmann kill made it 23-22, but a kill down the right side put Hagerstown on the doorstep, and a deflected attack went out of play off the Falcons to give the Hawks the win and tie the match.

Hagerstown came out on fire in set three, opening up an 8-2 advantage, thanks to mistakes from the Falcons on serve and at the net. Lackawanna battled back, closing a five-point gap at 19-14 to 19-18, thanks in part to a kill on an overpass from Hofmann and an ace from Girvan. Trailing 21-19, the Falcons got a kill from Hofmann to get within a point again, but Hagerstown got a kill in the back of the Lackawanna defense to restore a two-point lead. An ace made it a three-point gap, but a Hagerstown hitting error brought the margin back to two. A hitting error on Hagerstown made it a one-point set, but a cross-court hitting error on Lackawanna put the Hawks on the doorstep, and they got the set victory when the Falcons couldn't return the long rally, which made it 25-22 and gave Hagerstown the 2-1 lead.

The fourth set was all Hagerstown, as the Hawks, who seemingly got stronger as the match went on, built a lead through their net play and hitting prowess, and the Falcons started making a few of those mistakes that they were not making in the first set. Eventually, Hagerstown built a double-digit lead, and closed things out at 25-15 when an extended rally ended when the Falcons couldn't keep the ball off the floor, handing Hagerstown the win.

Lackawanna has dropped three straight matches for the first time this season. The Falcons are back in action on Tuesday, October 22nd, when they travel to Harrisburg Area CC in the state capital. The first serve is scheduled for 6:00pm ET inside the HACC gymnasium.
