SCRANTON, Pa. – Lackawanna College women's volleyball couldn't get out of its own way, and Northampton CC was only happy to take advantage, as the Spartans spoiled Dig Pink night at the Lackawanna College Student Union gymnasium with a three-set sweep (25-22, 25-18, 25-21) in Eastern Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (EPAC)action on Wednesday evening.
Â
The Falcons (15-6, 8-3) committed 52 combined errors in attacking, receiving, and serving on the night, and never really got themselves in any sort of sustained offensive groove throughout the night. Northampton (14-6, 6-3) got five kills from four different players, spreading out the offensive attack and winning several long rallies at the net.
Â
Lackawanna fell behind almost immediately in the first set, committing five errors through the first eight points and trailing 6-2. Later,
Angelique Fuentes (Miami, FL) came in and put down three kills in four points to bring Lackawanna within a point at 9-8. Northampton stretched the lead back out to a seven-point margin at 18-11, and led 21-15 with serve, but three straight hitting errors, plus a kill from
Nadia Toth (Dalton, PA) and an ace from
Gabriela Gomez (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic), brought the Falcons within a point again at 21-20. Another hitting error tied the set, and both teams traded points to make it 22-22. Lackawanna was then whistled for a net violation, which broke its serve, and the visitors got back-to-back kills to end the first set at 25-22.
Â
In set two, the Falcons started fast, jumping out to a 5-2 lead thanks to two kills from
Jana Hofmann (Colorado Springs, CO), plus a kill and an ace from
Aryana Girvan (Clarion, PA). The Falcons held a lead through to 10-7, but then Northampton scored the next nine of ten points, taking advantage of eight Lackawanna errors, including three straight aces. With Northampton holding a 16-11 lead, the Falcons scored four straight to close the gap to one at 16-15, but Northampton scored four straight to make it 20-15. Back-to-back attacking errors from the Spartans allowed the Falcons to get within three, but a service error gave Northampton a point right back. Eventually, the Spartans scored three straight from 22-18 on a kill, an ace, and a net violation on the Falcons to win 25-18 and take a 2-0 lead.
Â
The third set saw the Spartans start strong, opening up an 8-3 lead through the early going. That lead expanded to six at 13-7. The Falcons were able to eventually close the gap to just two points at 20-18, but Northampton once again lengthened the lead back out, helped by three straight Lackawanna errors. Fittingly, the match ended when the Falcons committed another error, down 24-21, not being able to return the ball over the net, dropping the match in straight sets and sending themselves to their second straight defeat.
Â
The Falcons were led by Fuentes, who had a match-high nine kills, while Hofmann had seven kills and one assist.
Maddilyn Durfee (Buffalo, NY) had ten assists, and
Zoe Ortueta (Miami, FL) added seven helpers.
Â
Lackawanna will try to rebound on Friday, October 18
th, when the Falcons play host to the Hawks from Hagerstown CC. It'll be Sophomore Night at the Lackawanna College Student Union gymnasium, with first serve set for a 6:00pm ET start, following the Sophomore Night festivities.
