SB: Falcons Falter In Region Playoffs

Lackawanna College Softball Fell In A Pair Of Games On Friday In Region XIX Playoff Competition, Ending Its Season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 5/12/23

GEORGETOWN, DE – Lackawanna College softball couldn't get over the hump, bowing out of the Region XIX DII Softball playoffs on Friday afternoon with a pair of losses in Georgetown, DE at Delaware Tech CC. It was the host and top-seeded Terry Hawks that bludgeoned the Falcons in game one, hitting four homeruns en route to a 10-2 victory in six innings. Then, in the elimination game, Lackawanna committed five errors that accounted for four of the six runs they allowed in a 6-5 loss to County College of Morris, ending the Falcons' tournament and their season.

The Falcons (28-19) just couldn't get themselves started in game one, as Delaware Tech (30-7-1) hit two homers in the first inning alone, and four total on its way to an impressive 10-2 win in six innings. Lackawanna had a pair of baserunners in the top frame, but couldn't capitalize, and Del Tech made the Falcons pay in the bottom half, cashing in a two-out double with a two-run homerun to make it 2-0, then hitting a homer with the very next batter to push the lead out to 3-0. Later, leading 4-0 in the bottom of the fourth, the Hawks cranked another homer to extend their lead. The Falcons fought back in the top of the fifth when Allyson Lemerise (Catonsville, MD) homered to center, and Krista Scoblick (Harvey's Lake, PA) hit a sac fly with the bases loaded to score another, but Lackawanna couldn't completely get back into it, and Del Tech capped the game with a five-run sixth inning, hitting a two-run homer to walk things off and end the game early with the run-rule victory. Catarena Sommers (Windham, OH) was 2-for-3, and Madison McVicar (Blakely, PA) went 2-for-3 to lead the Falcons, and Lemerise's homerun was the only extra base hit. Lemerise got the loss, giving up ten runs, nine earned, on eleven hits in five innings.

Two straight two-out singles put two on for the Falcons in the top of the first, but a fielder's choice quietly got Del Tech out of trouble, and set up their big bottom half of the first. Lemerise got the first two outs with ease, but a two-out double led to the two-out, two-run homer to center to give the Terry Hawks a 2-0 lead. It would be back-to-back homers, as the next batter also left the yard in center, making it 3-0 and throwing a haymaker at the Falcons.

In the bottom of the second, with a 3-0 lead, Del Tech manufactured some more two-out magic. A hit batter led the inning off, and a one-out walk put two on, but a fielder's choice eliminated the lead runner at third and put two down. That led to a two-out RBI single to center that scored a run to make it 4-0 after two.

The Falcons got a leadoff single from Sommers in the fourth, still down 4-0. After a strikeout and a pop out put two away, a Gwen Balavage (Avoca, PA) single, followed by a walk, loaded the bases with two outs, and Tess Ruschman (Easton, PA) put a charge into one to center, but it died just shy of the track and was caught for the third out, stranding the runners.

Delaware Tech made the Falcons pay, hitting a one-out homer to left field to stretch the lead out to 5-0. Lemerise recovered to get a fly out and a pop out, sandwiching a two-out walk, to limit the damage. She led the top of the fifth off with a solo homer to center to get the Falcons going. A walk, followed by a single, put two on with nobody out. After a strikeout, another single loaded the bases for the Falcons. Scoblick came up and lifted one to left field, deep enough to score a run on a sac fly and cut the deficit to 5-2. The Falcons wanted more, but a strikeout ended the potential rally early.

The Terry Hawks were retired in order in the bottom of the fifth, and the Falcons did the same in the top of the sixth, setting up the bottom half for Del Tech. A single led the inning off, then an error on a bunt attempt let that runner score and put the batter at second. A double to center scored another run to make it 7-2, Hawks. An RBI single scored that runner to make it 8-2, and then a two-run homer to center pushed the lead to eight and ended the game early.

Lackawanna had to wait until the late afternoon to play the elimination game, and the Falcons managed to overcome a 4-0 deficit against County College of Morris to take a 5-4 lead in the fourth inning, but the errors caught up to Lackawanna, and Morris secured the 6-5 win to eliminate the Falcons from the tournament. The Titans (21-19) built a 4-0 lead thanks to a pair of unearned runs in the first inning and an RBI double in the second. Lackawanna scored a pair of runs thanks to a few passed balls in the third, halving the deficit to 4-2. The Falcons added a few more in the fourth, when back-to-back singles from Skylar Borthwick (Pittston, PA) and McVicar gave the Falcons a 5-4 lead after four innings. Things unraveled in the sixth, however, when an error let a runner on, and that runner eventually scored form third on a passed ball to tie the game. An RBI ground out scored the other run, and the Titans got around a leadoff runner when McVicar reached on an error, stole second, and got to third on an error on the throw in the top of the seventh, retiring three straight batters to close the game out. McVicar and Borthwick had the only RBIs for the Falcons, while Emilee Dickinson (Hillsboro, OR) was 2-for-4. Alivia Graber (North Syracuse, NY) got hit with the loss, giving up six runs, only two earned, on six hits, while striking out four in 5.1 innings pitched.

Madison Maloney (Scranton, PA) got the Falcons going in the top of the first with a leadoff single, advancing to second on an error on the infield, but the Falcons had three straight outs to strand Maloney out on second. The Titans took advantage in the bottom frame, getting their own leadoff runner on second after a single and an error on the infield. A line out, followed by a ground out, put two away and the runner on third, and Morris scored that runner with an RBI double to center to make it 1-0. Another error put another runner on, and then a walk loaded the bases, still with two outs. A passed ball brought one run home, and a single to the pitcher scored another run to make it 3-0, Titans. Graber gave up one more single that loaded the bases, before getting a ground out back to herself to end the first.

Lackawanna wasted a two-out double from Dickinson on the second, and Morris added another run with a two-out double to left that pushed their advantage to 4-0.

The Falcons cut that deficit in half in the top of the third, taking advantage of three walks to load the bases, and a passed ball that let a run come home. A walk, followed by another passed ball, made it 4-2, and forced a pitching change from Morris. The Falcons couldn't keep the momentum going with a new pitcher, committing two straight outs to strand runners in scoring position and end the inning early, with the Falcons down 4-2.

Graber pitched around a two-out error in the bottom of the third to put up a zero, and the Falcons finally took advantage with some runs in the top of the fourth. A one-out double from Savannah Glover (Susquehanna, PA) got Lackawanna a base runner, and a walk, followed by a fielder's choice, made it runners on the corners with two outs. Borthwick delivered with an RBI single to left to cut it to 4-3, and McVicar doubled to left to score a pair of runs and give the Falcons the 5-4 lead.

The Titans got two baserunners in the bottom of the fifth, still down 5-4, but Graber pitched around that trouble to keep things scoreless. The bottom of the sixth would not go quite as smooth, as the Falcons committed an error to lead off the inning, their fifth of the game, letting a runner on. That runner stole second, and a single then put runners on the corners. A stolen base put those runners both in scoring position, and a passed ball tied the game, promptly followed by a ground out to the pitcher to make it 6-5, Titans. Morris got a walk, to put another runner on, and that forced a pitching change for the Falcons, as Aria Reyes (Allentown, PA) came in for Graber. Reyes got a pop out and a fly out to get the inning over with, and send the Falcons out for their last licks.

McVicar reached on an error, and then stole second base. The throw to second ate up the shortstop, giving McVicar a chance to get all the way to third with nobody out. A pinch hitter fouled out to left for the first out, and the next two batters went down without much fuss, ending the game and the Falcons season.

Lackawanna College softball's season has come to a close, with the Falcons falling just shy of cracking 30 wins, but once again finishing with a winning record under head coach Jeff Pittsman.
