SB: Lackawanna Heads To Delaware For Region XIX Playoffs

SCRANTON, Pa. – Riding a four-game win-streak, Lackawanna College softball will try to provide some fireworks for the Region XIX playoffs this weekend, as the Falcons travel to Georgetown, DE to face three other Region squads in the 2023 Region XIX DII Softball Tournament.

The double-elimination tourney starts on Friday, May 12
th, at Delaware Tech's Owens Campus in the south of Delaware. The top-seeded Terry Hawks will host Lackawanna College in game one at 10:00am ET. Game two will pit the second-seeded Mercer County CC Vikings against three-seed Morris at 12:00pm ET. The winners will face off at 2:00pm ET, and the losing teams from the first two games will play in an elimination contest at 4:00pm ET. About The Falcons
The Falcons (28-17) clinched the fourth-seed for the Region playoffs and, as a result, had to play a first-round contest with fifth-seeded Salem CC this past Tuesday. Lackawanna swept the Tuesday doubleheader to clinch the three-game series, winning 6-1 and 8-0 at home. The Falcons got solid pitching and timely hitting, helping to befuddle the Mighty Oaks for the second straight doubleheader in four days. You can read the recap

Alivia Graber (North Syracuse, NY) has thrown 90.1 innings so far this season, going 9-6 with a 6.20 ERA on the year. Graber has allowed 108 runs, 80 earned, on 131 hits, striking out 60 and walking 47 this year. Graber's opponents are hitting .325 against her this season. Graber has won her last two appearances, also both against Salem CC. She gave up three runs on four hits in a five-inning 12-3 win on Friday on the road, then pitched her best game of the year, giving up just two hits in six scoreless innings of an 8-0 win in game two on Tuesday. Tess Ruschman (Easton, PA), normally at second base for the Falcons, also doubles as a pitcher, going 4-3 with a 5.53 ERA in 14 appearances this year. In 49.1 innings of work, she's given up 47 runs, 39 earned, on 75 hits, striking out 30 and walking 12. Opponents are hitting .330 against Tess this year. Ruschman pitched won her last start, back on April 21
st against Hagerstown, giving up four runs on ten hits in seven innings of an 11-4 victory. She's made relief appearances in her last two times in the circle, giving up eight runs on eight hits in two innings against Potomac two weeks ago. Â Â

The Falcons are coached by
Jeff Pittsman, entering his 12th season at the helm for the Lackawanna softball. Coach Pitt was hired as the head coach in 2012, and was tasked with rebuilding the program from the ground up. Low in enthusiasm and overall numbers, coach Pitt got the Falcons through a tough first year to become immediately competitive in year two, improving by 13 wins in just one season. The next year, the Falcons finished .500, and by 2016, the Falcons won 20+ games for the first time in a while, and made the Region XIX playoffs, getting coach Pittsman the EPAC Coach of the Year. he won it again in 2017, when Lackawanna went 24-14 and won the Region XIX championship, their first since 2002. The Falcons won 29 games in 2018, making the Region XIX playoffs once again, and won 34 games in 2019, once again qualifying for the Region XIX tournament. In 2022, Pittsman got the Falcons to a 31-22 overall record and once again making the Region XIX tournament. Pittsman is 227-190 in his career at Lackawanna, with a Region XIX championship and two 30+ win seasons to his credit.

About #1 Delaware Tech
The Terry Hawks (29-7-1) are the top-seed and defending Region XIX champions entering the weekend. Delaware Tech clinched the #1 spot with a sweep over second-seed Mercer back on April 26
th, and it split its last action, a doubleheader on May 5
th against Morris, where Del Tech pounded the Titans for a 10-1 decision in game one, but then lost game two by a 9-6 score. Morris won that game by scoring five runs in the fifth to overcome a 4-1 deficit, then tacked on three more in the seventh, before holding on for the victory.

Del Tech is hitting .408 as a team this season, with a 1.107 OPS, boosted by a .645 slugging percentage this season. Sterling has scored 32 runs this year, and has eleven doubles and six homers to drive in 37 runs, third on the squad. Sterling has drawn five walks and stolen three bases this season. Sterling has 16 multi-hit games this year, and was 2-for-3 in game one against Morris last Friday, striking out once and stealing a base.

First base player Jada Courtney has 40 total hits this year and a .388 batting average for the Hawks. Courtney has a 1.073 OPS, boosted by her .641 slugging percentage. Courtney has six homers, tied with Sterling for third on the team, and has 14 extra base hits and 32 RBI so far this season. Courtney has scored 24 runs on the year, and has drawn eight walks, but is tied for team-worst at 15 strikeouts this year. Courtney has 12 multi-hit games on the year, and got a pair of them last week against Morris. She was a combined 5-for-7 with three runs scored, two doubles, and a homer, for three RBI in two games.

Pitcher Carly Collins has seen the most time in the circle, going 12-2 in 21 appearances for a 1.89 ERA. In her team-high 88.2 innings, Collins has given up 35 runs, 24 earned, on 77 hits, striking out 80 and walking 13. Collins has thrown double-digit strikeouts just once this year, coming in a 6-5 loss to Potomac where she struck out eleven Catamounts. She has ten games with five or more strikeouts this season. In her last start, she got the win in game one against Morris, allowing just one run on three hits and striking out four in six innings of the 10-1 victory.

Pitcher Alexis Dowdy is second on the team with 18 appearances, going 11-3 with a 2.61 ERA on the year. Dowdy has seen action in 77.2 innings, giving up 39 runs, 29 earned, on 67 hits, striking out a team-high 88 batters, but walking a team-high 17. Dowdy has twice struck out a season-high eleven batters, doing it most recently against CCBC Catonsville on April 18

The head coach for Delaware Tech is Guy Wilkins, who's been the head coach for the Terry Hawks since 2016. Now in his eighth season, Wilkins has guided the program to winning seasons in seven of his eight years, three times topping 20+ victories, and now back-to-back Region XIX championships. Wilkins won a pair of national titles and a Little League World Series with the Big League All-Stars in the ten years prior to coming to Del Tech. Wilkins played collegiate ball at Delaware State, and has served as a middle school, JV, and varsity assistant coach at Sussex Central HS for nearly 20 years. He also previously served as an assistant with the Del Tech baseball team for six years.

About #2 Mercer County CC
The Vikings (38-8) have had a stellar season, and have won eight straight heading into the weekend, including impressive doubleheader sweeps over nationally-ranked DIII Brookdale and perennial DIII power RCSJ Gloucester. The Vikings have scored in double-figures in five of their last eight games. The Brookdale doubleheader was most recent, with Mercer getting wins of 7-2 and 10-6 on the road last Thursday. The Vikings overcame an early deficit in game one to put up seven runs in the third inning, then rallied in the final two innings of game two to overcome a 6-4 deficit with three in the sixth and seventh innings to win 10-6. Mercer is hitting .389 on the season as a team, and has a collective OPS around 1.068 this season. Mercer has 19 games this season where it has scored ten or more runs, and averages over ten runs per contest this year. The Vikings have 59 homeruns, and have hit 169 extra base hits, including 96 doubles. They have drawn 143 walks and struck out 142 times this season. Truelove has 27 multi-hit games on the season, and was a combined 2-for-6 with three runs scored and an RBI in two games against Brookdale last Thursday. Â

Infielder Julia Hannawacker is second on the team with 71 total hits this season, posting a .444 batting average and a 1.023 OPS. Hannawacker has scored 67 runs, second on the team, and has seven doubles and 27 RBI this year. She's drawn 17 walks, and has struck out just six times this season. She has 36 extra base hits, with 15 doubles, tied for the team lead with Acevedo in doubles this year. Patel has drawn 12 walks this year, and has struck out nine times on the year. She's got 20 multi-hit games on the season, and was a combined 5-for-8 with three runs scored, a double, two homers, and six RBI against Brookdale in two games. Patel was 4-for-4 in game two, hitting her double and two homers to drive in five RBI. Â

Utility player Lillian Torres-Perez has 50 total hits and is hitting .362 for the Vikings this season, scoring 46 runs on the year and posting a .950 OPS this season. Torres-Perez has 12 doubles and 26 RBI this year, drawing 17 walks, but striking out 22 times this season. Torres-Perez has five stolen bases this year. She's got eleven multi-hit games this season, and is on an eight-game hitting streak entering the weekend. Land has 14 multi-hit games this year, seven coming in her last eight games, and has overcome an early-season slump where she didn't record a hit for 12 straight games to really contribute as of late. Land was a combined 2-for-8 with three runs scored and a homerun and three RBI in two games against Brookdale last week.

Shea Krebs leads the Vikings in innings pitched, throwing 104.1 on the year and going 17-3 with a 2.82 ERA this season. Krebs has given up 58 runs, 42 earned, on 101 hits, while striking out a team-high 115 this season, and walking 40. Krebs has thrown a season-best ten strikeouts on three separate occasions, and has gotten the win in her last three appearances, including a relief appearance in game two against Brookdale, where she gave up a run on three hits in four innings, striking out five to secure the win.

Delaney Misier has a 2.74 ERA in 89.1 innings, with nine wins and five saves in 26 appearances this season. She's given up 49 runs, 35 earned, on 86 hits, striking out 90 and walking 22 this year. Misier has twice gotten her season-high of eight strikeouts this year, and has won her last four appearances, including a complete-game victory over Brookdale, giving up two runs on four hits in seven innings, striking out five and walking four in the 7-2 win.

Gianna DeMatteo is 11-1 with a 5.05 ERA so far this season, pitching 87.1 innings on the year. She's allowed 75 runs, 63 earned, on 123 hits, while striking out 33 and surrendering 30 walks. DeMatteo has posted a season-high four strikeouts twice this season. She has gotten the result in just one of her last five appearances, getting a win against Gloucester back on May 2

The head softball coach for Mercer County is Ryan Zegarski, now in his 19
th season at the helm. Zegarski, a 2001 graduate of MCCC, has been the head softball coach since the fall of 2004, and he has enjoyed significant success at Mercer. Zegarski has taken the Vikings to three NJCAA World Series appearances, the latest in 2018. He's won three GSAC championships, and has three Region XIX championships, along with three Region XIX Coach of the Year awards. Zegarski played baseball at Mercer, helping the 2000 squad win a Region XIX and Northeast District Championship, while making an appearance in the NJCAA World Series. Zegarski went on to play baseball at Richard Stockton University in New Jersey, where he led the NJAC in batting average during his junior year. Zegarski is 556-210-1 in his career at Mercer.

About #3 County College Of Morris
The Titans (20-18) had an uneven season and it was exemplified by their last few games in April and early May, where Morris lost six of seven, then won three of its last four, including a big 9-6 win on the road over Delaware Tech last weekend in game two of the doubleheader, giving the Titans a massive split against the top team in the region and keeping themselves as the three-seed heading into this weekend's tournament. Â

There are a few game stats missing, but the Titans are hitting around .336 on the year, with a .876 OPS on the year. They average 6.7 runs per game on the year, and have 75 extra base hits on the year, with 52 doubles and 12 homers. The Titans have drawn 105 walks, and have only struck out 139 times this year, while stealing 44 bases. Pitching-wise, the Titans have a collective team ERA at 5.23 this season.

Game Details
The double-elimination tourney starts on Friday, May 12
th, at Delaware Tech's Owens Campus in the south of Delaware. The top-seeded Terry Hawks will host Lackawanna College in game one at 10:00am ET. Game two will pit the second-seeded Mercer County CC Vikings against three-seed Morris at 12:00pm ET. The winners will face off at 2:00pm ET, and the losing teams from the first two games will play in an elimination contest at 4:00pm ET. Should the Falcons get at least one win in their two games on Friday, they will play at least one more game on Saturday, May 13
th, against a team TBD. Losing both games would eliminate Lackawanna. Going 1-1 would guarantee the Falcons an elimination game at 10:00am ET at Delaware Tech. If the Falcons go 2-0 on Friday, they will await the winner of that 10:00am ET elimination game for a 1:00pm ET Region XIX Championship game at Delaware Tech.
