WBB: South Stays Hot As Falcons Corral Colts

Jayla South Went For Her Career-High For The Second Straight Game, And Lackawanna Put Together Its Most Complete Game Of The Year For The Win

12/9/23

SCRANTON, Pa. -- Jayla South had the hot-hand for the second straight game, scoring 31 points to lead Lackawanna College to an impressive 81-72 win at home against Middlesex County College in a Region XIX Division II women's basketball contest on Saturday afternoon at the Lackawanna Student Union.

The Falcons (4-6, 2-3) had three players in double-figures and shot 40.5% for the game. South (First Year; Long Pond, PA), who previously scored her career-high with 29 points against Essex on Tuesday, went for 31 points on 13-for-23 shooting, hitting three three-point shots, while also pulling down five boards and putting up four steals and three assists. She was one of three Falcons players in double-figures, as Desiree White (First Year; Carlisle, PA) had 14 points and six rebounds, and Nariyah Turner (Sophomore; Philadelphia, PA) added 13 points and five assists.

The Falcons trailed 11-3 early, and were down 20-19 after the first quarter, when Middlesex (9-3, 2-3) hit a three-pointer as time expired to reclaim the lead. Lackawanna responded by scoring the first ten points of the second quarter, taking the lead for good and never looking back. The visiting Colts had it as close as two points at 56-54 about two-and-a-half minutes into the fourth, but a killer 14-2 run from Lackawanna, punctuated by a South three-pointer, all but iced the game and gave Lackawanna an insurmountable cushion.

Lackawanna College had 13 steals and forced 24 turnovers on the day, turning that into 16 points off turnovers, and scoring 42 points in the paint. Middlesex shot 33% for the game, and had two players in double-figures, which included Vanessa Rivas's team-high 28 points and 18 rebounds, along with Courtney Hansen's 19 points.

Lackawanna has now won two straight games, and will have one more before the end of the semester. The Falcons are set to square off with the Mighty Oaks from Salem Community College next Saturday, December 16th, at 1:00pm ET in Carneys Point, NJ for a Region XIX DII contest.
