WBB: Falcons Falter At Monroe College

A Red-Hot Second Quarter Gave Monroe College The Cushion It Needed For An 89-50 Win

1/21/23

NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- A scorching second quarter was all the Monroe College Mustangs needed to pull away from Lackawanna College women's basketball on Saturday afternoon, as the Mustangs secured an 89-50 win over the Falcons inside the Monroe Athletic Complex.

Lackawanna College (7-6) actually kept pace with the D1 Mustangs through the first quarter, holding an early advantage at 8-4 just three minutes into the game, and staying within 18-14 after one. But Monroe (12-9) came out on fire in the second quarter, shooting a blistering 66%, while holding the Falcons without a made shot from the field for over four minutes of game time. Monroe outscored Lackawanna 32-13 in the period, blowing open the tight game and forcing the Falcons to play catch-up the rest of the way.

The Falcons struggled from the field, shooting just 24% for the game, but were 15-for-24 from the line on the afternoon. They also had 24 turnovers, and were outrebounded 60-to-35 by the bigger Mustangs. Seanlajah Smith (Philadelphia, PA) led the team with 13 points, her season-high, while Cianna Roberts (Brooklyn, NY) added 12 points, and Sidney Spence (Bronx, NY) put up ten points off the bench.

Monroe was led by Olivia Medford, who scored 22 points on 6-for-14 shooting, and Amiyah Edney-Holmes, who scored 20 points on 8-for-11 shooting, hitting four three-pointers, with seven rebounds.

The Falcons have a short turnaround, as they get back to Region 19 play on Tuesday, January 24th, when they travel to Essex County College. That game is set for a 5:00pm ET tip-off in Newark, NJ.
