WBB: Falcons Pick Up Region XIX Road Win At Raritan Valley, 60-47

Box Score 2/1/22

BRANCHBURG, NJ – The Lackawanna College Women's Basketball team evened its conference record and completed a regular season sweep of Raritan Valley CC, winning 60-47 on the road on Tuesday night.

Nya Morris led the Falcons with 20 points, while Gabrielle Jackson added 13 to help Lackawanna College to the victory. The Falcons struggled through three quarters, trailing after the first and clinging to a five-point lead to start the fourth quarter, but the offense came alive in the final frame, where Lackawanna College outscored Raritan 21-13. Ny Jackson, who hadn't scored through the first three quarters, scored all seven of her points in the fourth.

After both teams traded buckets to start the game, the Lions (9-12, 0-7) got a big three-point play from Brie Opdyke to make it 9-5 with 7:19 to go in the first quarter. Nya Morris answered quickly with a lay-up, but a Le'Ana Brown triple made it 12-7 Lions with about six-and-a-half to play in the first quarter.

A Gabrielle Jackson three made it 12-10 with about 5:27 to play, and the offenses both stagnated from there, with the Falcons scoring their last field goal with over four minutes to go, tying the game at 12. The Lions would eventually take a 15-14 lead at the end of the first quarter.

A Jay Lewis deflection, followed by a Nya Morris breakaway lay-in, broke the shooting slump for the Falcons, followed up by a McKeyah Duley corner three. A few minutes later, after the Lions had answered with their first bucket of the quarter, Gabrielle Jackson had a 5-0 run of her own. The result of all that was a 10-2 run that gave the Falcons a 24-17 lead with under four minutes to play. A pair of Raritan threes would help fuel a mini-surge for the Lions, but the Falcons would still lead at halftime, 28-25.

An Ashanté Amos three-pointer would get things started for the Falcons in the second half, and another triple, this time from Morris, made it 34-28 with 6:44 to play in the third quarter. Raritan Valley would use an 8-0 run to tie things up at 34 with 2:30 to play, but a McKeyah Duley three would answer on the other end, and another Falcon bucket made it 39-34 at the end of the third.

The fourth started with both teams trading offensive possessions, but it was a Gabrielle Jackson three-point play that gave the Falcons their first double-digit lead of the game at 46-36 with 6:40 to play. Lackawanna College would play excellent defense through the first half of the fourth, holding Raritan to just two points in the first five minutes, while putting up 13 of their own to extend the lead. One last Raritan push would get the lead back to single-digits at 54-47 with 1:50 to go, but the Falcons, despite some offensive struggles, would force critical turnovers, and get just enough on offense to come away with the win.

Lackawanna College continues in Region XIX play on Thursday, when they host the Harcum College Bears. It's the first of two straight games at the Lackawanna Student Union for the Falcons to end the week. Tip-off against Harcum is scheduled for 5:00pm ET.
