WBB: Disastrous First Quarter Spells Doom For Lackawanna In Opener

The Falcons Were Just 2-for-14 In the First Period, Falling Behind And Never Recovering

11/3/22

CATONSVILLE, Md. – Lackawanna College was hoping to take a big step forward with its season opener on Thursday night, but the Falcons stumbled out of the starting blocks and never recovered, dropping a 67-44 decision on the road at CCBC Catonsville.

Lackawanna College (0-1) was just 2-for-14 from the floor in the opening quarter, while Catonsville (1-1) shot a blistering 69% to take a commanding 25-4 advantage after just one quarter of play. That margin proved too much for the Falcons to overcome, as Lackawanna played catch-up the rest of the way, never getting closer than 17 points. Lackawanna shot 26% from the floor as a team, and hit just one three-pointer in 23 tries. The Falcons were outrebounded 47-35, and gave up 14 offensive rebounds, which got turned into 14 points for the Cardinals on the evening.

Lackawanna College was led by Dominique Geiger (Plainfield, NJ), who had a team-best nine points and a pair of steals. Cianna Roberts (Brooklyn, NY) came off the bench to score eight points and pull down five rebounds, while Mahogony Collins (Harrisburg, PA) had seven points and a team-high seven boards.

Things weren't off to the best start for either side in the first quarter, as there was just one bucket scored in the first three minutes to give Catonsville a 2-0 advantage. Back-to-back buckets for Ah'niya Tillery made it 6-0, Cardinals, but the Falcons finally got on the board with a Nya Jackson (Harrisburg, PA) layup at 5:25 in the first. Lackawanna missed four straight three-pointers over the next two-and-a-half minutes, while Catonsville stretched the lead to double-digits at 13-2. A Gabrielle Jackson (Darby Twp, PA) jumper made it 13-4 with 2:09 to play, but a pair of threes sparked what was a 12-0 run that stretched it to 25-4 after one.

McKeyah Duley (Massillon, OH) hit a three-pointer to start the second for the Falcons, and Lackawanna got a defensive stop on the other end, but the Falcons couldn't capitalize, and the Cards banged home a three to make it 30-7. Back-to-back layups for Lackawanna marked the first time that the Falcons had a run of points, but another jumper from Catonsville snapped that mini-run. Later, the Falcons kept going a few minutes between buckets, while Catonsville slowly grew the lead back out. A Roberts jumper with 4:33 was the last bucket the Falcons hit for the rest of the half, scoring only two points on free throws the rest of the way, enabling Catonsville to take a comfortable 39-17 lead at the break.

The Cardinals scored the first five points of the second half to maintain control, and the Falcons, after back-to-back scores, went cold for another two minutes and change, allowing Catonsville to keep their advantage. The lead never dipped below 23, and ballooned to as much as 32 the rest of the way.

The Falcons have a quick turnaround, with their next game scheduled for Saturday, November 5th, when they travel to Monroe College to take on the Mustangs. That game is set for a 4:00pm ET tip-off in New Rochelle, NY.
