NEW ROCHELLE, NY -- Lackawanna College dropped both of its games this past weekend at the Monroe College Classic, losing to the hosts Monroe College by a 78-56 score on Saturday, and then to Montgomery College by a 79-73 margin on Sunday afternoon.
Game One: Monroe College 78 - 56 Lackawanna College
Lackawanna College women's basketball fell behind early and couldn't quite make up the deficit, falling to the Monroe College Mustangs by a 78-56 margin on Saturday afternoon in the Monroe College Classic in New Rochelle, NY.
Â
The Falcons (0-2) shot just 27% from the field, and were 6-for-27 from downtown. Monroe held a 57-42 advantage on the glass, including 20 offensive rebounds, which they turned into 15 second-chance points. The Mustangs (1-0) held a 36-14 advantage in points-in-the-paint, and they outscored the Falcons 29-to-6 in bench points.
Â
Gabrielle Jackson (Darby Twp, PA) had a team-best 18 points for the Falcons, going 7-for-13 from the charity stripe, while grabbing four rebounds and dishing out three assists. Cianna Roberts (Brooklyn, NY) and Seanlajah Smith (Philadelphia, PA) each scored 12 points, with Smith earning a double-double with ten rebounds.
Â
Game Two: Montgomery College 79 - 73 Lackawanna College
Lackawanna College played its best game of the young season, overcoming a 15-point deficit to get within a point in the third against the talented Montgomery College Raptors, but the Falcons couldn't complete the comeback, running out of gas as Montgomery pulled away for a 79-73 win on Sunday at the Monroe College Classic in New Rochelle, NY.
Â
The Falcons (0-3) had another sluggish start, going just 1-for-10 from downtown and committing eleven turnovers in the first half. Lackawanna would recover to go 46.6% from the field and put five players in double-figures, but were still just 2-for-20 from the three-point line, and were outrebounded 45-40 by the Raptors. Cianna Roberts (Brooklyn, NY) led the Falcons with 16 points on 7-for-12 shooting, while Nya Jackson (Harrisburg, PA) scored 13 points, going 5-for-7 from the free throw line. Sidney Spence (Bronx, NY) came off the bench to score 12 points and bring down seven rebounds, while both
Gabrielle Jackson (Darby Twp, PA) and
McKeyah Duley (Massillon, OH) each had ten points. Mahogony Collins (Harrisburg, PA) had 13 rebounds and six blocks for the Falcons.
Â
Lackawanna College overcame a 15-point deficit, in part because of a furious 18-6 rally to start the third quarter that erased what was a 12-point halftime lead for Montgomery. Unfortunately, for the Falcons, their expended energy wasn't enough to stop Montgomery from breaking on their own 11-0 run to re-establish a double-digit lead by the end of the third quarter. In the fourth, the Falcons got it as close as five, but Montgomery managed to keep them at arm's length for the win.
Â
Lackawanna College plays next on Saturday, November 12
th, when they travel to Rochester, NY to take on Monroe Community College as part of the Monroe CC Classic.
