WBB: Falcons Bounce Back With Road Win At Mercer County CC

Box Score 1/19/21

WEST WINDSOR TWP., NJ – The Lackawanna College Women's Basketball team got back on the winning track, overcoming a slow first half to knock off Mercer County CC, 87-50, on Wednesday night in New Jersey.

Lackawanna College (6-6, 3-2) shot 39% for the game, but hit 45% in the second half, and forced the Vikings into 33 turnovers, while scoring 23 points on those turnovers, to help snap their two-game skid. The Falcons had four players in double-figures, and were led by Nya Morris with 23 points. Morris, in her first game back in the lineup after missing the previous three games, was 9-for-15 from the field and hit three triples for the Falcons. Ashanté Amos finished with a season-best 19 points, shooting 60% for the game and dishing out four assists. Ny Jackson finished with 11 points, while McKeyah Duley added 10 points and six rebounds to help the Falcons. Daeja Cromartie had seven points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

The first half was up-and-down for the Falcons, as the Vikings (2-10, 0-5) jumped out to a 6-0 lead barely two minutes in, before a McKeyah Duley corner three broke the scoreless opening for Lackawanna College. Nya Morris and Ny Jackson entered the game after a stoppage, and suddenly the Falcon defense picked up its intensity. Jackson deflected a steal and launched an outlet pass to Morris, who scored on a running lay-up to make it 7-6 Falcons at the 6:37 mark of the first quarter.

It was all part of a 14-3 run for Lackawanna to claim the lead for good. The Falcons grabbed a 20-13 lead after one quarter, and were able to maintain that margin, even expanding it by three to 39-29 at the break, despite poor first half shooting (33%) and trading turnovers with Mercer County.

The second half saw the Falcons start to find their footing, hitting the accelerator on a 17-2 run to blow the game open while scoring 29 points in the third quarter alone. The Falcons were a solid 18-for-25 from the free throw line for the contest, including a 9-for-12 showing in the second half, and had eight different players score in the game.

The Falcons come back home to the Lackawanna Student Union on Saturday, January 22nd, when they host the Delaware Tech CC Terry Hawks. Tip-off in the Region XIX match-up is set for 12:00pm ET, and will be the first game of a doubleheader, with the men's game to follow.
