SCRANTON, Pa. – The Lackawanna College men's soccer team gets back in action this weekend when the Falcons travel to Northampton CC to take on the Spartans in Bethlehem, PA at 12pm on Saturday 9/18.
About The Falcons
Lackawanna College (0-1-1) enters the contest coming off a 2-2 draw with Montgomery County CC on Thursday 9/16. The Falcons got goals from super sub
Samuel Acosta and defender
Mamadou Ndiaye, the first goals of the season for Lackawanna College. The Mustangs twice battled back from one-goal deficits to draw even, and neither team could find the breakthrough goal in the second half. The Falcons controlled the possession, for the most part, putting twelve shots on target against Montco, but the keeper managed ten saves to deny the Falcons a third goal.
Gerard Borosky, a Lakeland High School product, mans the midfield for the Falcons, and, along with defender
Mark Luyundi, is one of two players in their third season of competition for Lackawanna College. Other players expected to have an impact this season include a pair of freshman from Jamaica:
Deshawn Patterson from his defensive spot, and forward
Amari Forbes from up top.
Between the pipes, the Falcons deploy West Scranton High School grad
Matthew Pfohl.
Joe Evans, another West Scranton Invader in the Falcons ranks, is in his first season as the head coach, after years as an assistant coach for both the men's and women's teams.
About The Opponent
This will be the home opener for the Spartans (0-2-0), who opened the season at Ocean County College (7-1 loss) and at NJCAA DIII #3 Camden County College (6-2 loss).
The loss at Camden was a game where the Spartans fought hard to keep it competitive. After falling behind 3-0 in the opening half before scoring a free kick goal from 20 yards out to make it 3-1 at the halftime whistle. The Spartans would pull even closer after a foul in the box gifted them a penalty, which they converted to make it 3-2. From there, Camden would regain control in the 75
th minute to make it 4-2, before tacking on a pair of insurance goals before the full-time whistle.
Northampton CC is led by Hatungimana Salem, a freshman midfielder from Bethlehem who has scored two of the three goals for the Spartans this year. His first was a penalty kick against Ocean County in the first game, his second the free kick goal against Camden. Gabe Lawler has the other goal, also a penalty kick. In fact, through their first two games, all three of the Spartan goals have come from dead ball positions.
Koda Whalen and Drake Brackett both saw action in net for Northampton against Camden.
The head coach for Northampton is Mario Barrantes, who has been with the program since 2018. He improved the Spartans from 4-9-0 in his first season to 11-7-0 in his second, a seven-win increase that got Northampton into the Region XIX tournament.
