Lackawanna Gets by Northampton 9-8

April 29, 2021

Bethlehem, PA - For Northeast Pennsylvania residents it is a common saying that the weather is always better on the other side of the tunnel. That statement proved to be true today for Lackawanna College and Northampton Community College as the ideal weather allowed them to get in a nine-inning game. However, the day was brighter on the Falcons' side of the field as they clinched a 9-8 victory.

Lackawanna initially took a 2-1 lead after two and a half innings of play on a German Vasquez RBI double in the first and George Castro's ground out in the top of the third. The Spartans tied the score in the bottom of the third and expanded that lead to 5-3 the following inning. That lead was short as the Falcons regained a 6-5 lead in the fifth on a Raymond Vorhees RBI double, Brandon Ernst's run-scoring single and George Castro's two-run dinger. Northampton scored to knot the score at six in the bottom of the frame. In the sixth the teams traded runs with the Falcons' run coming on an Ernst RBI base-hit. In the seventh Lackawanna scored twice on Northampton misplays, an error and a passed ball, to give them a 9-7 lead. Neither team scored in the eighth.
However, in the ninth, Northampton gave the Falcons a scare when they doubled in a run to make the score 9-8. That would be all that they could put on the board as Lackawanna's Raymond Vorhees shut them down.

Of the 15 hits the Falcons recorded, eight went for extra bases. Kyle Borrello, Jesnel Soto, Matt Nyce, Jake DiCesare, Vorhees, Ernst and Vasquez all contributed doubles.  George Castro slammed the team's only home run. Four players also had multi-hit games, Ernst (4-2-4-2), Vorhees (6-2-2-2), Nyce (5-1-2-0) and DiCesare (5-2-2-0).

Zach Klapak earned the win, Kyle Borrello a hold and Vorhees a save.
