Branchburg, NJ - Saturday the Lackawanna College Women's basketball team claimed a spot in the NJCAA National Women's Basketball DII Tournament with a 69-62 win over Niagara County Community College. However, it wasn't easy. The Falcon's trailed at halftime by ten (33-23) and by four at the end of the third period (53-49). In the fourth period the Falcons kept grinding away with the determination to take home the District East B championship. They achieved the intended result. They overcame the deficit to Niagara and then built their margin of victory by outscoring the Thunder Wolves 20-9 in the final quarter.
Head Coach Joya Whittington was pleased about her player's performance. She said," The team worked hard this week. When they were down earlier in the game, they kept grinding away to stay in the game. In the final period, they just turned it on. You could see their determination. You could tell they wanted to win. You could see a predominately freshman team mature."
Leading the Falcons were Nya Morris and Jamiya Eaddy. Morris scored 20 points, nine of which came in their fourth period rally, while Eaddy contributed a double-double of 13 second-half points and 10 rebounds. Also making major contributions to the win were Gabrielle Jackson with 16 points and Kiana William's eight rebounds and five blocks.
This year's National Tournament will be held from April 20 through April 24, at Catawba Valley Community College, Hickory, North Carolina. It will be Coach Whittington's third trip to the national tournament, the last being at the conclusion of the 2018/19 season.
