Lackawanna College Falcons Softball Opens Season with a Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Scranton, PA - The Lackawanna College Softball Team opened the 2020 season in Myrtle Beach, SC with a Sunday doubleheader.  The Lady Falcons were happy to travel down south for warmer weather and they were looking forward to finally getting the season started.  The first game of the day, pitted Lackawanna against Henry Ford College.  Mia Pawelski got the opening day start for the Lady Falcons and she would make an immediate impact.  For the first 3 innings she pitched a shutout.  The offense gave her great support, as Gianna Telesco drove in the first run of the game.  That was followed by Pawelski getting it done at the plate with an RBI double, to give Lackawanna a 2-0 lead.  However, in the bottom of the 4th inning, Henry Ford tied things up, when they scored on a wild pitch.  Going into the 8th inning, the score was tied 3-3, until Chloe Fluharty hit a two run double to take a 5-3 lead.  Fluharty would then steal home to give the Falcons a 6-3 victory. Mia Pawelski earned the win, pitching 8 innings, while giving up only 6 hits and striking out 15.  For the game, Lackawanna racked up 12 hits, with Courtney Hoffman, Bella Mandarano and Mia Pawelski each having multiple hits for the Lady Falcons.  Hoffman led the team, going 3-4 from the plate.

In the second game of the day, Lackawanna faced a very tough John Wood Community College team.  John Wood struck first in the 2nd inning to go up early, with a 1-0 lead.  The Lady Falcons tied things up in the bottom of the 5th inning, when Courtney Hoffman connected on an RBI single.  Both teams would each score two more runs, but in the top of the 7th, John Wood singled in a run, to win the game 4-3.  For Lackawanna, Emma Stoker pitched 5 innings and was relieved by Amaya Townsend.  Lackawanna had a total of 10 hits for the game, with Courtney Hoffman going 3-4 from the plate, for the 2nd time in two games.

The Lady Falcons will return to action Monday in Myrtle Beach, when they will play another doubleheader.
