Scranton, PA – Saturday afternoon was Girls Youth Basketball Day at the Lackawanna College Historic Student Union. A number of local organizations were on hand to take part in the festivities, while also taking in the game between the Lady Falcons and the Lady Barons of Rowan College of Burlington County. Lackawanna came into the game undefeated at home and riding an 8 game winning streak. This was a crucial Region XIX match-up and both teams were looking to stay in the hunt for one of the top seeds in the tournament.
To start the first quarter, the Lady Falcons jumped out to an early 11-2 lead, behind the shooting of
Kyla Smith,
Briaunna McCullough and
Ciaira Loyd. A
Keyanah Price jumper extended the lead to 13-2, but RCBC answered with 5 straight points of their own. A 3-pointer by McCullough stopped the Lady Barons'' run and put Lackawanna up 16-7.
Miliesha Troche came off the bench and quickly found her groove, scoring 8 points, with two coming from behind the 3-point line, to give the Lady Falcons a 30-13 lead at the end of the quarter.
The second quarter saw Lackawanna convert on a total of four 3-pointers, with
Miliesha Troche,
Ciaira Loyd and
Briaunna McCullough all getting in on the action.
Jazmin Wright came off the bench and put in productive minutes, scoring 4 points and recording a defensive steal. The Lady Falcons' defense, once again, prevented RCBC from getting 2
nd chance opportunities, as they were dominant on the defensive glass.
Kiana Williams and
Briaunna McCullough both were able to establish position and come down with key rebounds, which turned into fast break points. As the buzzer sounded, Lackawanna would take a 52-23 lead into the half.
The Lady Falcons opened up the third quarter with a 15-4 run, which was capped off by another
Miliesha Troche 3-pointer. They were able to capitalize on RCBC turnovers, resulting in a number of scoring opportunities for Lackawanna.
Ciaira Loyd ran the fast break almost to perfection, distributing the ball to her teammates, which resulted in easy layups. Loyd also was able to find the basket herself and closed out the quarter with a jumper in the paint, to put the Lady Falcons up by 40 points, 70-30.
Even with a 40-point lead, Lackawanna did not let up the pressure. They continued to find the basket behind the shooting of
Keyanah Price,
Kiana Williams and
Kyla Smith. A 3-pointer by
Miliesha Troche, followed by another from
Alayah Cowan, extended the lead to 56 points, 89-33. The Lackawanna defense made it almost impossible for RCBC to find the basket, holding them to only 5 points in the quarter. Making the most of her playing time,
Alayah Cowan converted another jumper to close out the game and keep the Lady Falcons undefeated at home, 93-35.
With the win, Lackawanna moves to 17-3 overall and 8-1 in Region XIX.
Miliesha Troche led all scorers with 21 points and was 5-9 from behind the 3-point line. She was followed by
Kyla Smith with 15 points and 8 assists and by
Briaunna McCullough with 14 points, 13 rebounds and 5 steals.
Kiana Williams continued to dominate on the boards, grabbing a total of 16 rebounds. The Lady Falcons are back on the road next week as they travel to Bucks County Community College, for another crucial Region XIX game on Tuesday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00pm.
