Box Score Cheyney, PA – The Lackawanna College Women's Basketball team was back in action Monday night, after a long holiday break. After going 8-3 in the first half of the season, the Lady Falcons were seeking win #9, as they traveled to Cheyney, PA to take on NCAA Division II Cheyney University of PA. Cheyney is a 4-year program, and Lackawanna was looking forward to the challenge.
Ciaira Loyd wasted no time in the 1
st quarter connecting on two 3-pointers, while adding a 2-point field goal, to lead Lackawanna with 8 points. After sitting out a few games due to an injury,
Miliesha Troche, who is #6 in the NJCAA in 3pt %, picked up where she left off by adding a 3 of her own. The Lady Falcons' defense only allowed two Cheyney players to score for a total of 7 points in the quarter. Their strong defense also created a number of scoring opportunities on offense.
Jamie Brann and
Keyanah Price each added 4 points, while
Briaunna McCullough would connect from behind the 3-point line, to give Lackawanna a 29-7 lead to end the quarter.
In the 2
nd quarter, the Lady Wolves were able to match the Lady Falcons in the scoring category. For Lackawanna,
Kyla Smith and
Alayah Cowan each accounted for 5 points, while
Jasmine Lewis added 4 and
Keyanah Price added 2. The quarter saw Cheyney outscore Lackawanna 19-16, with the Lady Wolves' Ta'Shai Hamam leading all scorers with 6 points. As the quarter ended, the Lady Falcons would take a 45-26 lead going into the locker room.
The 3
rd quarter saw Lackawanna once again take control of the game, behind the strong offensive performance of
Keyanah Price. She led all scorers with 9 points, while
Briaunna McCullough contributed 6 points and
Jamie Brann followed with 5. The defense, once again, shut down Cheyney, only allowing them to score a total of 12 points. As the quarter ended, the Lady Falcons would take a commanding 71-38 lead.
In the final quarter, Cheyney's Jamyra Maye put her team on her shoulders and tried to get the Lady Wolves back in the game. She would go on to score 14 of her 29 points in the quarter, however, Lackawanna was able to withstand the Cheyney run.
Kyla Smith converted on 5 of 6 free throws, to put the game out of reach. As the quarter came to a close, the Lady Falcons came away with an 87-51 victory.
With the win, Lackawanna moves to 9-3 on the year.
Keyanah Price had one of her best games of the season, scoring 17 points in three quarters and grabbing 13 rebounds.
Kyla Smith also had an impressive night, connecting on 10-12 free-throws. The Lady Falcons are back in action Thursday as they visit the Monroe College-Bronx Express. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00pm.
